Dishwasher

Abstract

A dishwasher having spray arm, motor and pump components configured and mounted so as to occupy very low height. In one form the complete wash system is arranged as a drawer which slides in and out of a cabinet. The cabinet opening is stiffened against racking forces by incorporating an inverse portal frame in the opening flange. A synchronous AC motor is used with the rotor running within the wash chamber driving a wash pump integrated with a rotating spray arm. <IMAGE>

10 claims: 5 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A dishwasher comprising:(a) a wash chamber adapted to accommodate dishes and within which wash liquid is circulated, said wash chamber having a floor which is dished upward in the centre,(b) a rotatable spray and having liquid discharge nozzles which is located in the bottom of said wash chamber, said spray arm in turn comprising a hub portion and at least two diametrically opposed wing portions extending outwardly therefrom towards the side walls of said chamber, the hub portion mounted on the upwardly dished portion of said chamber floor and said wing portions shaped such that they droop downwardly away from the hub portion substantially parallel to the dished curvature of the chamber floor,(c) a rack within said chamber which supports dishes above the floor of said chamber, such that the lowest point of any circular vertically supported dish is substantially above the lowest point of the top surface of said spray arm,(d) a pump which pressurises said spray arm with wash liquid,(e) a shallow depth pancake shaped electric motor for driving said pump located under the upwardly dished portion of said chamber floor, and(f) the configuration and juxtaposition of the spray arm and electric motor being such that the distance from the bottom of the motor to the lowest point of the top surface of the spray arm is of the order of 55 mm.
  2. 3
A dishwasher according to either of claims 1 or 2 wherein said pump includes an impeller within said chamber and said spray arm is supported in the bottom of said chamber for rotation about said wash pump impeller, and wherein said spray arm has internal surfaces which define a co-acting casing for said wash pump impeller and which define a volute which allows delivery of wash liquid from said casing to said nozzles.
  3. 5
A dishwasher according to any one of the preceding claims wherein said wash chamber is housed in a cabinet, said pump and motor are integral components of said chamber, said wash chamber is slidably mounted within said cabinet in such a manner that it may be withdrawn horizontally out of said cabinet for access thereto, said wash chamber is open topped to allow top loading of dishes, and a wash chamber lid is mounted in the top of said cabinet, which lid is engaged with the wash chamber open top to sealably close off said wash chamber on retraction of the wash chamber into the cabinet.
  4. 7
A dishwasher as claimed in either of claims 5 or 6 wherein a water discharge spout is mounted in said cabinet so as to be capable of discharging into said wash chamber when said wash chamber is fully retracted within said cabinet, a water hose is connected at one end to said discharge spout and adapted at the other end to connect in use to a water supply connection.
  5. 8
A dishwasher combination comprising two dishwashers as each claimed in claim 7 wherein said water hoses are each connected to one outlet of dual electrically operated valves, said dual valve having a common connection adapted to connect in use to a household cold water tap.
