  1. 1
A valve for intake or exhaust of gas with respect to a compressor comprising:a seating plate (10) and a guard plate (12) releasably attached in opposed relation;the seating plate (10) having a plurality of clusters of holes (16) extending from an outer side of the seating plate (10) thereinto, the holes (16) of each cluster being arranged along a respective ring-shaped locus and communicating with respective seating surfaces (72, 74) opening through an inner side (70) of the seating plate (10), the clusters being non-concentrically spaced from one another about the seating plate (10);the guard plate (12) defining a respective stop surface (89) generally opposed to but spaced from the seating surfaces (72, 74) associated with each such cluster of holes (16), and having flow passages (76) through the guard plate (12) from an inner side thereof to an outer side thereof and communicating with the spaces between the stop surfaces (89) and seating surfaces (72, 74);a respective seal ring (20) reciprocable between each stop surface (89) and the respective opposed seating surfaces (72, 74) and having sealing surfaces sized and shaped to engage and seal against the respective seating surfaces (72, 74);and plurality of springs (22) carried by the guard plate (12) and each engaging a respective one of the seal rings (20) to bias the seal ring (20) toward the seating surfaces (72, 74),     characterized in that    each flow passage is formed by a port (76) being generally aligned with respect to a respective one of said clusters of holes (16);and    the top of each port (76) provides the stop surface (89) for the respective seal ring (20), this stop surface (89) being generally opposed to but spaced from the seating surfaces (72, 74) associated with the respective cluster of holes (16) to which this port (76) is generally aligned.
  2. 4
A device according to any one of claims 1-3 wherein each spring (22) is a helical coil spring with one end coil disposed in an annular groove in the respective seal ring (20) and the other end coil engaging a spring reaction shoulder on the guard plate (12).
  3. 7
A device according to any one of claims 1-6 wherein the sealing surfaces (72, 74) of each seal ring (20) include an inner annular sealing surface (90) adjacent the inner diameter of the seal ring (20) and an outer annular sealing surface (92) adjacent the outer diameter of the seal ring (20), the inner and outer sealing surfaces (90;92) inclined toward each other.
  4. 8
A device according to any one of claims 1-7 wherein the inner ends of the holes (16) of each cluster intersect a respective annular aperture (18) extending through the.inner side of the seating plate (10) and defining the respective seating surfaces (72, 74).
  5. 9
A device according to any one of claims 1-8 wherein the holes (16) of each cluster are arcuate slots following the respective ring-shaped locus.
  6. 10
A device according to any one of claims 1-9 wherein the seating plate (10) comprises a main body and a plurality of seat members (50) each removably mounted in a respective recess in the inner side of the main body and defining the seating surfaces (72, 74) for a respective such cluster of holes (16).
