Method for reducing power consumption in a monitor

Abstract

The invention relates to a method and arrangement for managing the power control of a monitor. In the solution according to the invention the monitor synchronizing signals are not monitored continuously in the OFF state but the monitoring is periodic. The solution according to the invention can be applied to all different kinds of display terminals and monitors.

9 claims: 3 independent, 6 dependent

  1. 1
A method for reducing power consumption in a monitor, wherein the operating state of the monitor is controlled using control signals and wherein the power supply for at least one part of the monitor is switched off for the duration of a power saving state in order to reduce power consumption, characterized in that said control signals are periodically monitored during the power saving state, and if any control signals requiring a change of the operating state of the monitor are not detected, the power saving state is continued.
  2. 4
A system for reducing the power consumption in a monitor, wherein the power supply for at least one monitor part can be switched off for the duration of the power saving state and wherein the operating state of the monitor is determined on the basis of control signals and which includes a monitoring element to monitor said control signals, characterized in that the monitoring element (4) for the operating state control signals is arranged so as to operate in a periodic manner, and in that the system is arranged so as to uphold the power saving state after an operating period of said monitoring element (4), if said monitoring element (4) does not detect a control signal requiring a change of the operating state of the monitor during said operating period.
  3. 9
The system of any one of claims 4 to 8, characterized in that the amount of energy supplied by the power supply unit (1, 2) during a control signal monitoring period is optimized to correspond to the amount of energy needed by said monitoring element (4).
