Composite braided guidewire

Abstract

This is a composite guidewire for use with a catheter for accessing a targeted site in a lumen system of a patient's body. The guidewire core or guidewire section may be of a stainless steel or a high elasticity metal alloy, preferably a Ni-Ti alloy, also preferably having specified physical parameters. The composite guidewire assembly is especially useful for accessing peripheral or soft tissue targets. The invention includes multi-section guidewire assemblies having superelastic alloy or stainless steel ribbon braided reinforcements along at least a portion of the core. A variation of the inventive guidewire includes a braid and a tie layer (and one or more lubricious polymers on the tie layer exterior) to enhance the guidewire's suitability for use within catheters and within the interior of vascular lumen.

29 claims: 10 independent, 19 dependent

  1. 1
A guidewire suitable for guiding a catheter within a body lumen, comprising an elongated, flexible wire core having at least a more proximal and a more distal section and a tubular ribbon braid covering at least a portion of that wire core.
  2. 6
The guidewire of any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the tubular braid comprises a superelastic alloy.
  3. 7
The guidewire of any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the tubular braid comprises a stainless steel.
  4. 8
The guidewire of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the tubular braid comprises a polymer.
  5. 9
The guidewire of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the tubular braid comprises carbon fibre.
  6. 11
The guidewire of any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a polymeric tie layer situated exterior to at least a portion of the braid.
  7. 18
The guidewire of any one of claims 1 to 17, where the tie layer additionally comprises a radio-opaque material selected from barium sulphate, bismuth trioxide, bismuth carbonate, tungsten and tantalum.
  8. 19
The guidewire of any one of the preceding claims, additionally comprising a catheter sheath.
  9. 20
The guidewire of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the elongated, flexible wire core has a mid-section, and wherein the more distal section is stainless steel.
  10. 25
A guidewire suitable for guiding a catheter within a body lumen, comprising:a) an elongated, flexible wire core having at least a proximal section, an adjacent super-elastic nickel/titanium alloy mid-section and a stainless steel distal section, andb) a tubular ribbon braid covering at least a potion of that wire.
