    Claims of equivalent WO 9607877 A1 1. A medical thermometer for estimating the temperature of a patient, comprising:a probe;a temperature sensor mounted in the probe, for' producing a signal indicating the temperature of the probe;a display;a sampler for repeatedly sampling the temperature sensor signal, to produce a succession of temperature measurements;and a processor configured to repeatedly estimate the patient's temperature based on the succession of temperature measurements, wherein the display displays the most recent estimate of the patient's temperature when the processor determines that a prescribed set of conditions has been met, and wherein such set of conditions varies in accordance with the values of the successive temperature estimates.

    A medical thermometer as defined in claim 1, wherein the prescribed set of conditions used by the processor includes a first set of conditions, used when the most recent estimate of the patient's temperature lies within a predetermined range of values, and a second set of conditions, used when the most recent estimate of the patient's temperature lies outside the predetermined range of values.

    A medical thermometer as defined in claim 2, wherein:the first set of conditions used by the processor is that a first predetermined number of successive temperature estimates lie within a first predetermined span of temperature values;and the second set of conditions used by the processor is that a second predetermined number of successive temperature estimates, larger than the first predetermined number, lie within a second predetermined span of temperature values.

    A medical thermometer as defined in claim 3, wherein:the first set of conditions further includes a condition that the sampler have sampled the temperature sensor signal for at least a first predetermined minimum time duration;and the second set of conditions further includes a condition that the sampler have sampled the temperature sensor signal for at least a second predetermined minimum time duration, longer than the first predetermined minimum time duration.

    A medical thermometer as defined in claim 3, wherein the first predetermined range of temperature values is less than the second predetermined range of temperature values.

    A medical thermometer as defined in claim 1, wherein:the thermometer further includes an electrical heater mounted on the probe, in a predetermined relationship to the temperature sensor;and the processor further is configured to measure an initial temperature at a start time, prior to receipt of the probe by the patient, and to apply to the heater an initial electrical signal having a prescribed parameter that varies according to the initial temperature measurement at the start time, to warm the probe.

    A medical thermometer as defined in claim 6, wherein:the initial temperature measurement at the start time is a measurement of the temperature of the probe;and the processor produces the initial temperature measurement at the start time by measuring the temperature sensor signal.

    A medical thermometer as defined in claim 1, wherein the sampler samples the temperature sensor signal at regular time intervals.

    A medical thermometer as defined in claim 1, wherein the display does not display any estimate of patient temperature until the processor determines that the prescribed set of conditions has been met.

    A medical thermometer for estimating the temperature of a patient, comprising:a probe;a temperature sensor mounted in the probe, for producing a signal indicating the temperature of the probe;a display;a sampler for sampling the temperature sensor signal at regular time intervals, to produce a succession of temperature measurements;and a processor configured to repeatedly estimate the patient's temperature based on the succession of temperature measurements, wherein the processor displays on the display the most recent estimate of the patient's temperature when the sampler has sampled the temperature sensor signal for at least a first predetermined minimum time duration, if a first predetermined number of successive temperature estimates lie within a first predetermined span of temperature values, and when the sampler has sampled the temperature sensor signal for at least a second predetermined minimum time duration, shorter than the first predetermined time duration, if a second predetermined number of successive temperature estimates lie within a second predetermined span of temperature values and if the most recent temperature estimate lies within a predetermined range of normal temperature values.

    A method for estimating a patient's temperature using a medical thermometer of the kind having a probe and a sensor that produces a signal indicating the temperature of the probe, comprising:repeatedly measuring the sensor signal, to produce a succession of temperature measurements;repeatedly evaluating the succession of temperature measurements using predetermined criteria, to provide a succession of estimates of the patient's temperature;and displaying the most recent estimate of the patient's temperature when a prescribed set of conditions is met, wherein such set of conditions varies according to the values of the successive temperature estimates.

    A method as defined in claim 11, wherein the prescribed set of conditions used in the step of displaying includes a first set of conditions, used when the most recent estimate of the patient's temperature lies within a predetermined range of values, and a second set of conditions, used when the most recent estimate of the patient's temperature lies outside the predetermined range of values.

    A method as defined in claim 12, wherein:the first set of conditions used in the step of displaying includes a condition that the steps of repeatedly measuring and repeatedly evaluating be performed for at least a first predetermined minimum time duration and further includes a condition that a first predetermined number of successive temperature estimates lie within a first predetermined span of temperature values;and the second set of conditions used in the step of displaying includes a condition that the steps of repeatedly measuring and repeatedly evaluating be performed for at least a second predetermined minimum time duration, longer than the first predetermined time duration, and further includes a condition that a second predetermined number of successive temperature estimates lie within a second predetermined span of temperature values.

    A medical thermometer for measuring the temperature of a patient, comprising:a probe configured to be received by the patient;a temperature sensor, mounted in the probe, that provides a signal indicating the temperature of the probe;an electrical heater mounted in the probe, that warms the probe in response to an electrical signal;and a processor configured to measure an initial temperature at a start time, prior to receipt of the probe by the patient, and to apply to the electrical heater an initial electrical signal having a prescribed parameter that varies according to the initial temperature measurement at the start time, to warm the probe.

    A medical thermometer as defined in claim 14, wherein the electrical heater is separate from the temperature sensor and mounted in the probe in a predetermined relationship to the temperature sensor.

    A medical thermometer as defined in claim 14, wherein:the medical thermometer further includes an electrical power source having a variable voltage;the processor further is configured to measure the voltage of the electrical power source;and the initial electrical signal applied by the processor to the electrical heater has a prescribed parameter that varies according to both the initial temperature measurement at the start time and also the voltage measurement.

    A medical thermometer as defined in claim 14, wherein the prescribed parameter of the initial electrical signal is pulse duration.

    A medical thermometer as defined in claim 14, wherein:the initial temperature measurement at the start time is a measurement of the temperature of the probe;and the processor produces the initial temperature measurement at the start time by measuring the temperature sensor signal.

    A medical thermometer as defined in claim 14, wherein the processor further is configured to repeatedly sample the temperature sensor signal and to apply a prescribed signal to the electrical heater, after the initial electrical signal has ended, to controllably adjust the measured temperature of the probe to a predetermined value.

    A medical thermometer as defined in claim 19, wherein:the processor samples the temperature sensor signal at regular time intervals;and the prescribed signal applied to the electrical heater by the processor is a sequence of pulses having selected time durations.

    A medical thermometer as defined in claim 19, wherein the prescribed signal applied to the electrical heater after the initial electrical signal has ended, to controllably adjust the measured temperature of the probe to a predetermined value, varies in accordance with the most recent sample of the temperature sensor signal and with the rate of change of the temperature sensor signal.

    A medical thermometer as defined in claim 14, wherein:the probe includes a hollow metallic tip;the temperature sensor is a thermistor bonded to an inside wall of the probe's hollow metallic tip;and the electrical heater is a resistor bonded to the inside wall of the probe's hollow metallic tip.

    A medical thermometer as defined in claim 22, wherein the thermistor and the resistor are bonded to the inside wall of the probe's hollow metallic tip at substantially diametrically opposed positions.

    A medical thermometer as defined in claim 14, wherein the processor further is configured to preliminarily calibrate the probe by applying to the electrical heating means a calibration pulse of predetermined duration and measuring the resulting rise in the temperature of the probe.

    A medical thermometer comprising:an elongated probe including a hollow metallic tip;a thermistor bonded to an inside wall of the probe's hollow metallic tip, for generating an electrical signal that varies according to the thermistor's temperature;a resistor bonded to the inside wall of the probe's hollow metallic tip, at a location spaced circumferentially from the thermistor;and an electrical circuit for selectively applying an electrical current to the resistor, to warm the probe's hollow metallic tip to a selected temperature. 26. A medical thermometer as defined in claim 25, wherein: the elongated probe further includes an elongated base having a remote end;and the hollow metallic tip has a closed end and an open end sized to be attached securely to the remote end of the elongated base. 27. A medical thermometer as defined in claim 26, wherein the hollow metallic tip is formed of stainless steel and has a substantially uniform thickness less than or equal to about 0.1 millimeters. 28. A medical thermometer as defined in claim 25, wherein the thermistor and the resistor are bonded to the inside wall of the probe's hollow metallic tip, at substantially diametrically opposed locations. A medical thermometer for measuring the temperature of a patient , comprising : a probe configured to be received by the patient ;a temperature sensor, mounted in the probe., that provides a sensor signal indicating the temperature of the sensor;an electrical heater, mounted in the probe, that warms the probe in response to an electrical signal;and a processor configured to measure an initial temperature at a start time, prior to receipt of the probe by the patient, and to apply to the electrical heater an initial electrical signal having a prescribed parameter that varies according to the initial temperature measurement, wherein the prescribed parameter is selected to warm the probe to a temperature at or near a predetermined target temperature. 15. A medical thermometer as defined in claim 14, wherein the electrical heater is separate from the temperature sensor and is mounted in the probe in a predetermined relationship to the temperature sensor. 16. A medical thermometer as defined in claim 14, wherein: the medical thermometer further includes an electrical power source having a variable voltage;the processor further is configured to measure the voltage of the electrical power source;and the prescribed parameter of the initial electrical signal applied by the processor to the electrical heater varies according to both the initial temperature measurement and the voltage measurement . * 17. A medical thermometer as defined in claim 14, wherein: the initial electrical signal is a substantially continuous pulse;and the prescribed parameter of the initial electrical signal is pulse duration. 18. A medical thermometer as defined in claim 14, wherein: the initial temperature measurement is a measurement of the temperature of the probe;and the processor produces the initial temperature measurement by measuring the sensor signal . 19. A medical thermometer as defined in claim 14, wherein the processor further is configured to repeatedly sample the sensor signal, after the initial electrical signal has ended, and to apply a prescribed signal to the electrical heater, to controllably regulate the measured temperature of the probe to the predetermined target temperature. 20. A medical thermometer as defined in claim 19, wherein: the processor samples the sensor signal at regular time intervals;and the prescribed signal applied to the electrical heater by the processor is a sequence of pulses having selected time durations. 21. A medical thermometer as defined in claim 19, wherein the prescribed signal applied to the electrical heater after the initial electrical signal has ended varies according to the most recent sample of the sensor signal and according to the rate of change of the sensor signal. 22. A medical thermometer as defined in claim * 14, wherein: the probe includes a hollow metallic tip;the temperature sensor is a thermistor bonded to an inside wall of the probe's hollow metallic tip;and the electrical heater is a resistor bonded to the inside wall of the probe's hollow metallic tip. 23. A medical thermometer as defined in claim 22, wherein the thermistor and the resistor are bonded to the inside wall of the probe's hollow metallic tip at substantially diametrically opposed positions. 24. A medical thermometer as defined in claim 22, wherein: the elongated probe further includes an elongated base having a remote end;and the hollow metallic tip has a closed end and an open end sized to be attached securely to the remote end of the elongated base. 25. A medical thermometer as defined in claim 24, wherein the hollow metallic tip is formed of stainless steel and has a substantially uniform thickness less than or equal to about 0.1 millimeters.

    A medical thermometer as defined in claim 14, wherein the processor further is configured to preliminarily calibrate the probe by applying to the electrical heater a calibration pulse of predetermined duration and measuring the resulting change in the sensor signal.

    A method for measuring a patient's temperature using a medical thermometer of the kind having a probe, a temperature sensor mounted in the probe and configured to produce a sensor signal indicating the temperature of the sensor, and an electrical heater mounted in the probe and configured to warm the probe in ' response to an electrical signal, the method comprising:measuring the sensor signal at a start time, prior to receipt of the probe by the patient, to produce an initial temperature measurement;and applying an initial electrical signal to the electrical heater, wherein the initial electrical signal has a prescribed parameter that varies according to the initial temperature measurement, and wherein the prescribed parameter is selected to warm the probe to a temperature at or near a predetermined target temperature.

    A method as defined in claim 27, wherein:the medical thermometer further includes an electrical power source having a variable voltage;the method further includes measuring the voltage of the electrical power source;and the prescribed parameter of the initial electrical signal applied to the electrical heater in the step of applying varies according to both the initial temperature measurement and the voltage measurement .

    A method as defined in claim 27, wherein:the initial electrical signal. is a substantially continuous pulse;and the prescribed parameter of the initial electrical signal is pulse duration.

    A method as defined in claim 27, wherein:the initial temperature measurement is a measurement of the temperature of the probe;and the step of measuring includes measuring the sensor signal.

    A method as defined in claim 27, and further including:repeatedly sampling the sensor signal, after the step of applying the initial electrical signal has ended;and applying a prescribed control signal to the 'electrical heater, after the step of applying the initial electrical signal has ended, to controllably regulate the temperature of the probe to a temperature at or near the predetermined target temperature.

    A method as defined in claim 31, wherein:the step of repeatedly sampling occurs at regular time intervals;and the prescribed control signal applied to the electrical heater in the step of applying, after the step of applying the initial electrical signal has ended, is a sequence of pulses having selected time durations.

    A method as defined in claim 31, wherein the prescribed signal applied to the electrical heater in the step of applying, after the step of applying the initial electrical signal has ended, varies according to the most recent sample of the sensor signal and according to the rate of change of the sensor signal.
