An apparatus comprising an optical amplifier (112; 1000, 2000) for amplifying a WDM optical signal having a variable number of channels associated with different wavelengths; and a controller (114, 116; 66, 70) for controlling the optical amplifier (112:1000, 2000) to amplify the WDM optical signal prior to and subsequent to a variation of the number of channels in the WDM signal so that a power level of the amplified WDM signal is maintained at an approximately constant level in accordance with the number of channels in the light signal, characterised by the controller being for controlling the optical amplifier to amplify the WDM optical signal with an approximately constant gain during the variation of the number of channels in the WDM optical signal.
