  1. 1
A network switch for transferring data packets, comprising:a plurality of network ports (104);a plurality of packet buffers (206);a switch matrix (200) coupled to said plurality of network ports (104);and a switch controller (208) coupled to said switch matrix (200), characterised in that : each network ports (104) comprises a network input and output port;said switch matrix (200) is coupled between said network input/output ports (104) and said packet buffers (206) and is operable under control of said switch controller (208) to provide an input data channel between any one of said plurality of network input/output ports (104) and any one of said plurality of packet buffers (206), and is independently operable under control of said switch controller (208) to provide an output data channel between any one of said plurality of packet buffers (206) and any one of said plurality of network input/output ports (104).
  2. 5
The network switch of any of claims 1 to 4, wherein said switch controller (208) further comprises:input logic (606) coupled to said plurality of packet buffers (206) for controlling transfer of input data packets, wherein said input logic (606) determines a free one of said plurality of packet buffers (206) and asserts a corresponding buffer number (SBUFNUM).
  3. 8
The network switch of any of claims 1 to 7, wherein said switch controller (208) further comprises:output logic (608) coupled to said plurality of packet buffers (206) for determining if any of said plurality of packet buffers (206) stores data for any one of said plurality of network input/output ports (104), and for asserting a corresponding one of a plurality of transmit pending signals (TXPEND) indicative thereof;and each of said plurality of network input/output ports (104) including logic (310) for receiving a corresponding one of said plurality of transmit pending signals (TXPEND) and for asserting a corresponding one of a plurality of enable signals (RXEN) indicating it is available to receive a data packet;wherein said output logic(608) provides a port number to said switch matrix (200) identifying one of said plurality of network input/output ports (104) and a buffer number (SBUFNUM) identifying one of said plurality of packet buffers (206) storing data for said one of said plurality of network input/output ports (104), wherein said switch matrix (200) establishes an output data channel between said one of said plurality of network ports (206) and said one of said plurality of packet buffers (206).
  4. 10
The network switch of any of claims 1 to 9, wherein said switch controller (208) further comprises:memory (210) including a packet table (604) for storing buffer numbers (SBUFNUM) corresponding to any of said plurality of packet buffers (206) storing data for one of said plurality of network input/output ports (104).
  5. 12
The network switch of any of claims 1 to 11, further comprising:a hash memory (217) coupled to said plurality of network input/output ports (104) for storing a table of network port numbers corresponding to hash addresses for said plurality of network input/output ports (104).
  6. 14
The network switch of any of claims 1 to 13, further comprising:a packet processor (212) coupled to an input and an output of said switch matrix (200) for sending data packets to, and for receiving data packets from, said switch matrix (200) under control of said switch controller (208), wherein said packet processor (212) receives data packets having a new address, and duplicates multicast and broadcast data packets.
  7. 16
A method of transferring a data packet a by a network switch (102) including a plurality of network ports (104) coupled to one or more networks, a plurality of packet buffers (206) and a switch matrix (200) operable under control of a switch controller (208), characterised by :receiving a data packet at a first network input/output port (104) of the network switch (102) for sending to a second network input/output port (104) of the network switch (102);identifying an available one of said packet buffers (206) from all of the plurality of packet buffers (206);operating the switch controller (208) and the switch matrix (200) to: establish an input data channel in the switch matrix (200) between the first network input/output port (104) and the identified packet buffer (206);and send the data packet to the identified packet buffer (206) on the input data channel for temporary storage;determining when the second network input/output port (104) is ready to receive the pending data packet stored by the identified packet buffer (206);and operating the switch controller (208) and the switch matrix (200) to: establish an output data channel in the switch matrix (200) between the identified packet buffer(206) and the second network input/output port (104);and sending the pending data packet from the identified packet buffer (206) to the second network input/output port (104) on the output data channel.
