Method and apparatus for electronic testing of electricity meters

Abstract

An electronic energy meter senses input voltage and current signals and processes them to generate a plurality of power measurements. The meter includes a processing system (14/16) for selecting one of the plurality of power measurements and for generating a pulsed test signal related to the selected power measurement for testing the operation of the meter, and an optical communications port (40) coupled to the processing system for transmitting the pulsed test signal from the meter to a testing device external to the meter.

17 claims: 8 independent, 9 dependent

  1. 1
An electronic energy meter that senses input voltage and current signals and processes them to generate a plurality of power measurements, the meter comprising:a processing system for selecting one of the plurality of power measurements and for generating a pulsed test signal related to the selected power measurement for testing the operation of the meter, and an optical communications port coupled to the processing system for transmitting the pulsed test signal from the meter to a testing device external to the meter.
  2. 5
The meter of any preceding claim, wherein the processing system selects one of the Kh value or a Ke value as the pulse rate of the pulsed test signal to be transmitted.
  3. 6
The meter of any preceding claim, wherein the optical communications port is adapted to receive a data command from a source external to the meter and wherein the processing means selects the power measurement based on information provided by the data command.
  4. 7
The meter of any preceding claim, wherein the optical communications port receives communications while transmitting the pulsed test signal and transmits communications and the pulsed test signal, one-at-a-time, over the optical communications port.
  5. 8
An electronic energy meter that senses input voltage and current signals and processes them to generates a plurality of power measurements including real power, reactive power and apparent power, the meter comprising:a communications interface for receiving a data command identifying a selected one of the various power measurements from a source external to the meter, a processing system coupled to the communications interface for processing the data command and generating a pulsed test signal related to the selected power measurement, and a test interface coupled to the processing system for transmitting the pulsed test signal to a testing device external to the meter.
  6. 13
The meter of any one of claims 8 to 12, wherein the test interface and the communications interface are integrated into a single interface of the meter.
  7. 16
The meter of any one of claims 1 to 7 or 14 or 15, wherein the optical communications port is the only means provided by the electronic energy meter for outputting the pulsed test signal from the meter.
  8. 17
The meter of any preceding claim, wherein the test signal is generated in a form for use by standard calibration test equipment.
