  1. 1
An electrostatically actuated color video display (10) having a layered matrix structure and employing light-modulating capacitor pixels, the layered matrix structure comprising:i) a movable electrode shutter layer (18) having a composite array of movable electrodes (20) the movable electrodes having an open, retracted position providing a clear light path past the movable electrode and a second, extended position in which the light path is occluded by the movable electrode;ii) a dielectric layer (32) having a transparent sheet-like dielectric member in capacitive contact with the movable electrodes (20) in the extended position of the movable electrodes;iii) a control electrode layer (22) having an array of transparent control electrodes (36) contacting and in electrostatic engagement with a second surface of the dielectric member to control the movable electrodes (20), the movable electrodes, the dielectric member (32) and the control electrodes (36) providing an array of light-modulating capacitors;iv) drive circuitry to apply drive voltages selectively between the fixed electrodes (36) and the movable electrodes (20) to effect movement of selected movable electrodes;and v) a color screen layer (24) disposed adjacent to the array of light-modulating capacitors and composed of colored screen segments (38) and;whereby movement of an individual movable electrode (20) into a retracted, open position displays one of the segments of the colored screen layer (22) to a viewer and a plurality of the movable electrodes (22) can be actuated to display an image area composed of a corresponding plurality of the colored screen segments to the viewer;characterized in that individual said colored screen segments (38) display a similar colorant-modulated appearance by applied transmitted light or by reflected ambient light, that only one shutter layer is provided and that the color screen layer (24) is disposed behind the movable electrode layer (18), with respect to the viewer, whereby the composed image area is viewable by said reflected light or said transmitted light, depending upon the ambient illumination level.
  2. 2
A video display according to Claim 1 characterized in that control means are selective such as to control the extent of excursion of individual electrodes (20) and control of pixel intensity and that each movable electrode (20) has a conductive electrode surface to contact the dielectric member (32).
  3. 3
A video display according to Claim 1 characterized in that the cells (38) are arranged in adjacent groups of four cells colored red, green, blue and white respectively.
  4. 4
A video display according to Claim 3 characterized in that the colored screen (24) is composed of four layers of colorant-loaded transparent plastics material arranged in patterns to give the individual cells desired visual characteristics and having respectively a red, a green, a blue and a white appearance, the four layers each being patterned to provide desired individual cell characteristics.
  5. 5
A video display according to Claim 1, 2, 3 or 4 characterized in that the movable electrodes (20) present a black appearance to the viewer in the extended position and are configured and disposed for the composite array of movable electrodes to provide the appearance of a substantially continuous black screen at an intended viewing distance when the electrodes are all in the extended positions.
