17 claims: 7 independent, 10 dependent

  1. 1
A system for operating an implantable stimulator comprising:an implantable stimulator;a power source;an inductor coil adapted to gather emf power transmissions, a rectifier, and voltage regulating means, all electrically coupled to said power source and all mounted in said implantable stimulator for supplying replenishing current to said power source,    wherein said power source is a high value, small size, capacitive energy storing unit (36;420;510) having a maximum rated voltage, being contained within said implantable stimulator, having sufficient power to supply the implantable stimulator on an exclusive basis over at least an 8 hour period, and having a capacitive rating of at least 0.1 farads.
  2. 8
The system of any one of the claims 4-7 characterized in that said external unit (20;212;610;612) includes one of an audible and visual indicator (78;80;750) for alerting the user of completion of the charging cycle.
  3. 9
The system of any one of claims 4-8 characterized in that said external unit (20;212;610;612) is portable and is powered by one of a rechargeable battery (70;724) and non-rechargeable battery (724).
  4. 10
The system of any one of claims 4-9 characterized in that said implantable stimulator (10) includes an emf sensitive ON/OFF switch (15;540), and activating means (38;536), coupled to said emf sensitive switch (15;540), for activating and deactivating said implantable stimulator (10), and in that said system includes a user controlled emf source (14), matched to said emf sensitive switch (15;540), which enables the user to non-invasively turn ON and turn OFF the implantable stimulator.
  5. 11
The system of any one of claims 4-10 characterized in that said external unit (20; 212; 610; 612) includes:programming means (90, 92;220;624, 650;742;730) for programming said implantable stimulator (10) such that said implantable stimulator (10) delivers electrical stimulation pulses to target tissue in a manner dependent upon a stimulation program.
  6. 15
The system of any one of claims 11-14 characterized in that said external unit (20;212;610;or 746) and said implantable stimulator (10) each include means for checking the exchange of telemetry data and commands therebetween.
  7. 16
The system of any one of claims 11-15 characterized in that said external unit (20;212;610;or 746) includes means to interrogate said first micro-controller (38;516) and memory (48;516) in order to ascertain the validity of said stimulation program stored therein.
