A surveying system for rotating automatically a collimation axis of the telescope portion of a surveying machine (11) in horizontal and vertical directions, comprising:a machine body (13) and a telescope portion (14) rotatable in horizontal and vertical directions, respectively;a signal light projecting device (16) for projecting a signal light (P3) from the side of a target point (B) toward said surveying machine (11);rough-direction detecting devices (20) disposed on the side of said machine body (13) for receiving said signal light from said signal light projecting device (16);a precise-direction detecting device (21) disposed on the machine body (13) or said telescope portion (14) and suitable to be directed toward the collimation axis of the telescope portion for receiving said signal light from said signal light projecting device (16);and control means (24) for causing said collimation axis of the telescope portion to be directed toward said signal light projecting device (16) based on a difference between the collimation axis of the telescope portion and the direction of signal light received lights detected by said rough-direction detecting devices (20), wherein said precise-direction detecting device (21) is for detecting precisely said collimation axis of the telescope portion, and said rough-direction detecting devices (20) are for detecting roughly said collimation axis of the telescope portion, characterized in that said rough-direction detecting devices (20) are disposed at least three direction sides of the machine body (13) orthogonal to each other in the horizontal plane and that the surveying machine (11) is adapted such that the surveying direction of said surveying machine (11) is suitable to be roughly directed toward the target point (B) in accordance with strength of the signal light received by the rough-direction detecting devices (20).
