Process for the preparation of crystalline vinylaromatic polymers with a predominant syndiotactic structure

Abstract

Process for the preparation of crystalline vinylaromatic polymers with a predominant syndiotactic structure which involves polymerizing vinylaromatic monomers in the presence of a catalytic system comprising: a titanium complex having general formula (I): wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4, the same or different, represent a hydrogen atom or a C1-C20 alkyl radical or a C6-C20 arylalkyl or aryl radical, on the condition that at least one of these is different from hydrogen.

10 claims: 5 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A process for the preparation of crystalline vinylaromatic polymers with a predominant syndiotactic structure which comprises polymerizing vinylaromatic monomers, either alone or mixed with at least one other ethylenically unsaturated copolymerizable monomer, in the presence of a catalytic system essentially consisting of:a) a titanium complex having general formula (I): wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4, the same or different, represent a hydrogen atom or a C1-C20 alkyl radical or a C6-C20 arylalkyl or aryl radical, on the condition that at least one of these is different from hydrogen;R5 represents a hydrogen atom;X1, X2 and X3, the same or different, represent a halogen such as chlorine, or R, OR, NR2 groups with R as a C1-C20 alkyl radical or a C6-C20 aryl or arylalkyl radical;andb) a cocatalyst selected from an alkylalumoxane and a compound of boron having formula (II):         BX1X2X3     (II) or one of its salts, wherein X1, X2 and X3, the same or different, represent a C1-C20 fluorinated hydrocarbon radical.
  2. 4
The process according to any of the previous claims, wherein the catalytic system comprises an aluminum alkyl in which the alkyl group contains from 1 to 6 carbon atoms.
  3. 6
The process according to any of the previous claims, wherein the polymerization reaction is carried out in mass or in solvent.
  4. 8
The process according to any of the previous claims wherein the polymerization is carried out at temperatures of between 20 and 100°C.
  5. 9
A titanium complex having general formula (I):wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4, the same or different, represent a hydrogen atom or a C1-C20 alkyl radical or a C6-C20 arylalkyl or aryl radical, on the condition that at least one of these is different from hydrogen;R5 represents a hydrogen atom;X1, X2 and X3, the same or different, represent a halogen such as chlorine, or R, OR, NR2 groups with R as a C1-C20 alkyl radical or a C6-C20 aryl or arylalkyl radical.
