Asynchronous transfer mode wireless communications systems with handoff and method of operation

Abstract

A radio communications system (10) having a mobile station (30) and at least two base stations (13, 14). ATM radio channels (31, 32) are provided between the remote station and base stations. Each of the ATM channels supports communication though ATM cells over a common frequency band. At least one ATM node (21) is coupled to the base stations. A base station controller (11) is coupled to the ATM node. The base station controller has a combiner (303) for combining cell streams received from the first and second base stations and an ATM signalling circuit (330) for sending ATM commands to the ATM node for dividing cell streams at the ATM node to the first and second base stations. The remote station (30) has a logic unit (520) for combining cell streams received from the first and second base stations during a handoff from the first base station to the second base station.

  1. 1
A radio communications system comprising:a remote station having a logic unit;a first base station and at least a second base station;and a first ATM radio channel between the remote station and the first base station;characterized by: a second ATM radio channel between the remote station and the second base station, wherein each of the first and second ATM radio channels supports communication though ATM cells over a common frequency band;at least one ATM node coupled to the first and second base stations;and a base station controller coupled to the ATM node, the base station controller having a combiner for combining cell streams received from the first and second base stations and having an ATM signalling circuit for sending ATM commands to the ATM node for dividing cell streams at the ATM node to the first and second base stations,    wherein the logic unit of the remote station is arranged for combining cell streams received from the first and second base stations during a handoff from the first base station to the second base station.
  2. 2
A base station controller of a radio communications system comprising an input and an ATM switch coupled to the input, characterized by:a combiner coupled to the ATM switch;an output coupled to the combiner;a control processing element coupled to the combiner;an ATM signalling circuit coupled to the control processing element and an output coupled to the ATM signalling element for coupling to an ATM node and for providing ATM commands to the output.
  3. 4
A method of combining first and second cell streams in a node of a radio communications system, characterized by:receiving a first cell stream from a first connection, the first cell stream including first synchronization cells;receiving a second cell stream from a second connection, the second cell stream including second synchronization cells;outputting the first cell stream until a first synchronization cell is received;receiving a second synchronization cell;and outputting the second cell stream following the second synchronization cell.
  4. 11
A method of communication between a remote station and first and second base stations, characterized by:receiving at regular intervals from the first base station, over a radio channel having a predetermined frequency band, first physical layer synchronization cells and receiving first ATM cells interspersed between the first physical layer synchronization cells;receiving at regular intervals from the second base station, over the same radio channel having the predetermined frequency band, second physical layer synchronization cells and receiving second ATM cells interspersed between the second physical layer synchronization cells;and transmitting ATM cells to at least one of the first and second base stations.
  5. 16
A method of operation of a remote station of a radio communications system comprising a remote station and at least first and second base station, the remote station charcterized by the steps of:powering up a receiver during first time periods corresponding to physical layer synchronization cells arriving from the first base station and second time periods corresponding to ATM cells arriving from the first base station;determining that handoff conditions are met;powering up the receiver for a third time period longer than the first and second time periods.
  6. 20
A method of operation of a radio communications system comprising a remote station, a first base station and at least a second base station, characterized by an ATM communication connection established between the remote station and the first base station with at least a first virtual connection identifier, the method comprising the steps of:determining that handoff conditions are met for a handoff to the second base station;selecting a second virtual path identifier and a second virtual connection identifier for a connection between the second base station and the remote station.
