Optimal solar tacking system

Abstract

A spacecraft (20) traveling in a volume of space receiving radiation from the sun and encountering an undesired force. The spacecraft (20) has a solar panel (28) movably attached to the spacecraft (20) and a solar panel controller (50) which controls the movement of the solar panel (28), wherein the controller (50) moves the solar panel (28) in a time modulated manner so that a torque is generated which compensates for the undesired force.

  1. 1
A spacecraft (20) traveling in a volume of space receiving radiation from the sun, comprising:a solar panel (28);and a sensor (38) measuring undesired forces exerted on said spacecraft (20) and generating a signal (40) representing said undesired forces;characterized by an evaluator (44) which receives said signal (40) and calculates from said signal (40) a torque (T w , T o ) to be applied to said spacecraft (20) necessary to compensate for said undesired forces;a comparator (46) generating a comparator signal (48) indicative of whether said torque (T w , T o ) is within a predetermined range;and said solar panel controller (50) receiving said comparator signal (48), wherein (i) if said comparator signal (48) indicates that said torque (T w , T o ) is within said predetermined range, then said torque (T w , T o ) is applied to said spacecraft (20) by moving said solar panel (28) to a position relative to said radiation for a fixed period P;and (ii) if said comparator signal (48) indicates that said torque (T w , T o ) is outside said predetermined range, then said torque (T w , T o ) is applied to said spacecraft (20) by tacking said solar panel (28) between at least two different positions relative to said received radiation during said fixed period P.
  2. 2
A spacecraft (20) traveling in a volume of space receiving radiation from the sun and encountering an undesired force, comprising:a solar panel (28) movably attached to said spacecraft (20);a solar panel controller (50) which controls the movement of said solar panel (28),    characterized in that said controller (50) moves said solar panel (28) in a time modulated manner so that a torque (T w , T o ) is generated which compensates for said undesired force.
  3. 3
The spacecraft of claims 1 or 2, characterized in that said solar panel (28) is rotatably attached to said spacecraft (20).
  4. 4
The spacecraft of any of claims 1 or 3, characterized in that said tacking is time modulated.
  5. 5
The spacecraft of any of claims 1 - 4, characterized by a second solar panel (28).
  6. 6
A method of compensating for an undesired force exerted on a spacecraft (20) traveling in a volume of space which has a solar panel (28) receiving radiation from the sun, said method comprising the steps of:measuring the undesired force exerted on said spacecraft (20);and determining from the measured undesired force a torque (T w , T o ) to be applied to said spacecraft (20) necessary to compensate for said undesired force;characterized by the steps of: comparing said determined torque (T w , T o ) with a predetermined range;applying said determined torque (T w , T o ) to said spacecraft by moving said solar panel (28) to a position relative to said radiation for a fixed period P, if said torque (T w , T o ) is within said predetermined range;applying said determined torque (T w , T o ) to said spacecraft (20) by tacking said solar panel (28) between at least two different positions relative to said received radiation during said fixed period P, if said torque (T w , T o ) is outside said range.
  7. 7
A method of compensating for an undesired force exerted on a spacecraft (20) traveling in a volume of space which has a solar panel (28) receiving radiation from the sun, said method comprising the steps of:moving said solar panel (28) relative to said spacecraft (20);characterized by moving said solar panel (28) in a time modulated manner so that a torque (T w , T o ) is generated which compensates for said undesired force.
  8. 9
The method of any of claims 6 - 8, characterized in that movement of said solar panel (28) is accomplished by rotating said solar panel (28) relative to an axis of revolution.
  9. 10
The method of any of claims 6 - 9, characterized in that said spacecraft (20) comprises a second solar panel (28) which is not moved during said fixed period P, if said torque (T w , T o ) is outside said range.
