32 claims: 1 independent, 31 dependent

  1. 1
RF tissue ablation apparatus, comprising:a delivery catheter (12) insertable into body tissue and having a distal end (16) and a proximal end (14);means (18) for holding said catheter at said proximal end;electrode deployment means (22) positioned at least partially within said catheter, said electrode deployment means including a plurality of retractable electromagnetically conductive electrodes (20) which are advanceable from the distal end of the delivery catheter, are insertable into tissue so as to penetrate said tissue and have a non-deployed state when positioned within said catheter and a deployed state when advanced from said distal end of said catheter;wherein: said retractable electrodes emerge from the distal end of the catheter when advanced therefrom and deploy in a lateral direction away from the periphery of the distal end of the delivery catheter so as to define a three dimensional ablation volume between the deployed electrodes , said electrodes being connectable to a source of controllable RF energy for controlled application of RF energy to said three dimensional ablation volume;each of said plurality of electrodes, in said deployed state, exhibits at least one radius of curvature outside of and away from said catheter such that a plurality of said deployed electrodes distend laterally with respect to said catheter collectively to define said three-dimensional ablation volume;and at least one said electrode changes direction along its length in said deployed state.
  2. 2
Apparatus according to Claim 1, wherein said ablation volume is defined substantially by the peripheries of said plurality of electrodes in said deployed state.
  3. 8
Apparatus according to Claim 6 or Claim 7, wherein a said electrode exhibits, in said deployed state, at least two radii of curvature in one plane.
  4. 9
Apparatus according to any one of Claims 6 to 8, wherein at least one of said electrodes exhibits, in said deployed state, at least one radius of curvature in at least two planes.
  5. 15
Apparatus according to Claim 14, further comprising a source of infusing medium coupled to each of said electrodes.
  6. 16
Apparatus according to Claim 14, further comprising a source of chemotherapeutic agent coupled to each of said electrodes.
  7. 22
Apparatus according to Claim 21, wherein said obturator has a sharpened distal end.
  8. 23
Apparatus according to Claim 21 or Claim 22, wherein said obturator is positioned in said delivery catheter for the introduction of said delivery catheter to an internal body site.
  9. 24
Apparatus according to any one of Claims 21 to 23, wherein said obturator is removable from said delivery catheter after said delivery catheter is positioned at an internal body site, whereby said electrode deployment device is then positionable in said delivery catheter.
  10. 28
Apparatus according to Claim 1, further comprising said source of electrical RF energy connected to at least one said electrode.
  11. 29
Apparatus according to Claim 28, comprising impedance measurement means for controlling the application of RF energy.
  12. 30
Apparatus according to Claim 28, comprising temperature measurement means for controlling the application of RF energy.
  13. 32
Apparatus according to any one of Claims 1 to 31 for bipolar energy delivery.
