Method and system for automatically inspecting ophthalmic lenses

Abstract

A method and system for automatically inspecting an ophthalmic lens. The method includes the steps of directing a light beam through the lens and onto an array of pixels, and assigning to each pixel a data value representing the intensity of the light beam on the pixel. The data values are then processed according to a predetermined program to determine if the lens contains any one of a group of predetermined conditions.

  1. 1
A method for automatically inspecting an ophthalmic lens (84), comprising:directing a light beam (82) through the lens (84) and onto an array (46) of pixels (146);assigning to each pixel (146) a data value representing the intensity of the light beam on the pixel;and processing said data values according to a predetermined program to determine if the lens (84) contains any one of a plurality of predetermined conditions;wherein the ophthalmic lens (84) includes first and second discs, the discs having generally circumferential first and second outside edges (150a,150b) respectively, characterised in that: the processing step includes the steps of i) identifying selected ones of the pixels located on the image of the first outside edge of the lens;and ii) for each of the selected ones of the pixels, identifying another pixel on the first outside edge (150a) of the lens image, a given distance from said selected one of the pixels, identifying (386) a first vector extending through said selected one of the pixels and said another pixel, identifying (390) a second vector extending through said selected one of the pixels and said center point, computing (392) a dot product of said first and second vectors, comparing (402) the dot product to a predetermined value, and identifying (404) the lens as flawed if the dot product is greater than said predetermined value.
  2. 2
A system (10) for automatically inspecting an ophthalmic lens (84), comprising:an array (46) of pixels (146);means (14) to direct a light beam (82) through the lens (84) and onto the array (46) of pixels;means (62) to assign to each pixel a data value representing the intensity of the light beam on the pixel;and processing means (20) to process said data values according to a predetermined program to determine if the lens (84) contains any one of a plurality of predetermined conditions;wherein the ophthalmic lens includes first and second discs, the discs having generally circumferential first and second outside edges (150a,150b) respectively, characterised in that: the processing means (20) includes (i) means (64) to identify selected ones of the pixels located on the image of the first outside edge (150a) of the lens, (ii) means (64) to identify, for each one of the selected pixels, another pixel on the outside edge of the lens image, a given distance from said selected one of the pixels;and to identify a first vector extending through said selected one of the pixels and said another pixel, and to identify a second vector extending through said selected one of the pixels and said center point, and (iii) means (64) to identify the lens as flawed if a dot product of said first and second vectors is greater than a predetermined value.
