Network access to internet and stored multimedia services from a terminal supporting the H.320 protocol

Abstract

Internet access is provided to a multimedia terminal (101, 102, 103, 104) supporting the H.320 protocol through a gateway server (125) that is connected to the Internet. The data stream of the H.320 bearer channel (ISDN phone line or switched 56 kbps facilities) is used for the exchange of data between the accessing terminal and the gateway server, which outputs and receives such data onto and from the Internet, respectively. The gateway server is implemented to function to directly exchange on the H.320 data stream information requests and responsive data in the TCP/IP format used for Internet transport. Alternatively, the gateway server is implemented to function as a proxy to which requests are passed from the terminal over the H.320 data stream, and where function calls are made and locally converted to TCP/IP format for transport onto the Internet. For responsive data received from the Internet, the proxy gateway server removes the TCP/IP formatting and transmits the resultant data back to the terminal over the H.320 data stream.

  1. 1
In a telecommunications network, a method of providing Internet access to a multimedia terminal capable of communicating voice, video and data over separate voice, video and data streams, respectively, of a bearer channel, the method comprising the steps of:establishing a connection between the terminal and a gateway server over the bearer channel;passing a request received by the gateway server from the terminal over the data stream to the Internet;and passing information received by the gateway server from the Internet to the terminal over the data stream.
  2. 9
A system in a switched telecommunications network for providing Internet access to a multimedia terminal capable of communicating voice, video and data over separate voice, video and data streams, respectively, of a bearer channel, the system comprising:a gateway server;a first communications path in the switched telecommunications network for connecting the terminal to said gateway server over the bearer channel;and a second communications path connecting said gateway server to the Internet;said gateway server passing a request received from the terminal over the data stream of the bearer channel of the first communications path to said second communications path for transmission onto the Internet, and passing information received from the Internet on said second communications path onto the bearer channel of the first communications path for transmission of the information to the terminal over the data stream.
