A method for controlling power of a transmitter in a mobile communications device having a variable data transmission rate, the transmitter communicating over a channel between the mobile communications device and a base station, the base station having a data table comprising a plurality of signal to noise ratio thresholds, the method comprising the steps of:the mobile communications device transmitting a signal to the base station, the signal being transmitted at a predetermined data rate and having a signal to noise ratio;the base station comparing the signal to noise ratio to each of the plurality of signal to noise ratio thresholds;the base station generating at least one power control command in response to the step of comparing;the base station transmitting the at least one power control command to the mobile communications device;and the mobile communications device implementing a first power control command of the at least one power control command.
  2. 2
A method for controlling power of a transmitter in a mobile communications device having a plurality of data transmission rates, the transmitter communicating signals over a channel between the mobile communications device and a base station, each signal comprising a plurality of power control groups, the base station having a data table comprising a signal to noise ratio threshold for each of the plurality of data transmission rates, the method comprising the steps of:the mobile communications device transmitting a signal to the base station at a first predetermined data transmission rate of the plurality of data transmission rates, the signal having a signal to noise ratio;the base station comparing the signal to noise ratio to each of the plurality of signal to noise ratio thresholds;the base station generating a power control command for each data transmission rate in response to the step of comparing;the base station transmitting each power control command to the mobile communications device;and the mobile communications device increasing or decreasing the transmitter power in response to each received power control command and the first pretermined data transmission rate.
  3. 6
A method for controlling power of a transmitter in a mobile communications device having a variable rate vocoder capable of transmitting data signals at a plurality of predetermined data rates, the transmitter communicating signals over a channel between the mobile communications device and at least one base station, each signal comprising a plurality of data frames and each data frame comprising a plurality of power control groups, each of the at least one base stations having a data table comprising a signal to noise ratio threshold for each of the plurality of data transmission rates, the method comprising the steps of:the mobile communications device transmitting a signal to the base station at a first predetermined data rate of the plurality of predetermined data rates, the signal having a signal to noise ratio;the base station comparing the signal to noise ratio to each of the plurality of signal to noise ratio thresholds;the base station generating a power control command in each power control group in response to the step of comparing;the base station transmitting each power control group to the mobile communications device;and the mobile communications device increasing or decreasing the transmitter power in response to each received power control command and the first predetermined data transmission rate.
  4. 7
A method for controlling power in a radio having a transmitter with an output power and a variable rate vocoder capable of transmitting signals at a plurality of predetermined data rates, the transmitter transmitting signals to at least one base station over a reverse channel, the at least one base station transmitting signals to the radio over a forward channel, each signal comprising a plurality of data frames and each data frame comprising a plurality of power control groups, the method comprising the steps of:establishing a predetermined set of data rates between the radio and a first base station of the at least one base station, each data rate of the predetermined set of data rates having an associated predetermined energy threshold level;generating a power control command in response to a first predetermined data rate of the predetermine set of data rates and the first data rate's associated predetermined energy threshold level;transmitting the power control command to the radio over the forward channel;comparing the actual data rate to the first predetermined data rate;and the radio adjusting its output power in response to the power control command and the step of comparing.
  5. 8
A method for controlling power in a radio having a transmitter with an output power and a variable rate vocoder capable of transmitting signals at a plurality of predetermined data rates, the transmitter transmitting signals to at least one base station over a reverse channel, the at least one base station transmitting signals to the radio over a forward channel, each signal comprising a plurality of data frames and each data frame comprising a plurality of power control groups, the method comprising the steps of:establishing a predetermined set of data rates between the radio and a first base station of the at least one base station, each data rate of the predetermined set of data rates having an associated predetermined energy threshold level;generating a transmitter power control command in response to a first predetermined data rate of the predetermine set of data rates and the first data rate's associated predetermined energy threshold level;transmitting the transmitter power control command to the radio over the forward channel;comparing the actual data rate to the first predetermined data rate;if the transmitter power control command indicates turning power up and the actual data rate is greater than the first predetermined data rate, increasing the output power;if the transmitter power control command indicates turning power down and the actual data rate is greater than the first predetermined data rate, ignoring the transmitter power control command;if the transmitter power control command indicates turning power up and the actual data rate is less than the first predetermined data rate, ignoring the transmitter power control command;and if the transmitter power control command indicates turning the power down and the actual data rate is less than the first predetermined data rate, decreasing the output power.
