  1. 1
An apparatus for recording information on a portion ,of an optical disc (14) that rotates about an axis and does not have pre-manufactured tracks for recording information comprising:a radiation source (20) for emitting radiant energy (22);a first optical system (12) for impinging a first beam of said radiant energy on the optical disk;a second optical system (16) for producing a second beam of said radiant energy;characterised by: a reference scale (18), being stationary with respect to the axis of the optical disc, having spaced apart indicia (50) representing a pitch between the information tracks being formed on the optical disc while recording information thereon, wherein the second beam impinges on said reference scale and interacts therewith to define a third beam (44);a movable carriage carrying a portion of the first optical system and the second optical system, wherein movement of the carriage displaces the second beam along a longitudinal axis of the reference scale;coarse tracking means (52) responsive to the third beam for coarsely positioning the second beam along the reference scale;and fine tracking means (54) responsive to the third beam for finely positioning the second beam along the reference scale;the first beam being movable radially across the surface of the rotating optical disc in correspondence with the displacement of the second beam along the reference scale.
  2. 8
A method for recording information on a portion of a rotating optical disc (14) that does not have pre-manufactured information tracks, comprising the steps of:emitting a beam of radiant energy (22) from a radiation source (20);forming a first path for the beam of radiant energy with a first optical system (12), the first path extending from the radiation source to the optical disc;forming a second path for the bea f radiant energy with a second optical system (16);characterized by the second path extending from the radiation source to a non-rotating stationary reference scale (18), wherein a portion of the second path of the beam of radiant energy is in common with a portion of the first path of the beam of radiant energy;tracking the reference scale with the second optical system for coarsely positioning the first optical system with respect to the optical disc;thereupon tracking the reference scale with the second optical system for finely positioning the first optical system with respect to the optical disc;and irradiating the optical disc through the first optical system to record information thereon.
