  1. 1
A powder coating system for applying a powder coating to a part comprising a plurality of powder spray guns (18, 22, 24) disposed with respect to the part (14), at least one powder source (28) supplying powder to the spray guns (18, 22, 24) through a plurality of hoses (30) connected between the at least one powder source and the spray guns, a plurality of flow regulators (130, 132), each flow regulator varying the flow of powder through one of the hoses (30), a plurality of gun controls (38, 40, 42), each of the gun controls (38, 40, 42) including a processor (106) connected to a memory (116), the memory (116) of each of the plurality of gun controls (38, 40, 42) being connected to one of the plurality of powder spray guns (18, 22, 24) and storing a plurality of sets of spray parameters, each set of parameters defining operating parameters for a respective powder spray gun and being associated with a physical characteristic of the part (14), a communications network (44) in electrical communication with the plurality of gun controls (38, 40, 42) for providing data to the plurality of gun controls (38, 40, 42), a system control (34) in electrical communication with the electrical communications network (44) and the plurality of gun controls (38, 40, 43) for providing data to and receiving data from the plurality of gun controls, the system control (34) including a non-volatile memory for storing the plurality of sets of parameters, a sensor (46, 54) responsive to the movement of a conveyor (16) which supports the part (14) and moves it past the plurality of spray guns (18, 22, 24), the sensor (46, 50) producing system signals which are a function of the motion of the part with respect to the sensor and the communications network (44) being in electrical communication with the sensor (46, 54) for transmitting the system signals to the plurality of gun controls (38, 40, 42), the sensor comprising a first sensor (46) responsive to motion of the part (14) for producing first system signals representing changes of position of the part being moved by the conveyor (16) and a second sensor (54) for sensing the part and producing second system signals representing a physical characteristic of the part (14), the system control further comprising an input connected to the first sensor (46) and an output connected to the communications network (44) for producing from the first system signals a part position signal to the plurality of gun controls (38, 40, 42) in response to the first sensor (46) detecting motion of the part and the system control (46) being responsive to the second sensor (54) and producing from the second system signals a part identification signal to the plurality of gun controls (38, 40, 42) in response to the part (14) moving with respect to the second sensor (54), wherein each of the flow regulators (130, 132) is connected to one of the gun controls (38, 40, 42), each of the gun controls (38, 40, 42), in response to a part position signal and a part identification signal, selecting one set of spray parameters to vary the operation of the associated regulator (130, 132) and control the flow of powder through one of the hoses (30) to control the operation of the powder spray gun.
  2. 2
A powder coating system as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the system control (34) further comprises a part position control (50) for producing the part position signal and the part identification signal.
  3. 3
A powder coating system as claimed in either Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the system control (34) is remotely located from each of the plurality of gun controls (38, 40, 42).
  4. 4
A powder coating system as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the powder coating system includes a plurality of booth devices and the system control (34) further comprises a programmable logic control (52) operatively connected to the plurality of booth devices.
  5. 5
A powder coating system as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the system control (34) includes an operator control (36) for receiving data from and providing data to an operator.
  6. 6
A powder coating system as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the communications network (44) comprises a plurality of first network interfaces (98), each first network interface located with and connected to each of the gun controls;a second network interface (104) located with an connected to the system control;a communications media (57) in electrical communication with the plurality of first network interfaces (98) and the second network interface (104) for transmitting data between the second network interface and each of the plurality of first network interfaces.
  7. 7
A powder coating system as claimed in any preceding claim wherein each of the plurality of gun controls (38, 40, 42) is remotely located from the respective one of the plurality of powder spray guns (18, 22, 24).
