8 claims: 4 independent, 4 dependent

  1. 1
A synchronising circuit for use in a multiplexed packet based telecommunications network capable of carrying Constant Bit Rate CBR data streams (2) between a source exchange (4) and a destination exchange (10) in the form of multiplexed packets (6), said packets including a source Residual Time Stamp RTS generated from a network reference frequency (28) and the frequency of the CBR data streams (2) using an RTS method, said synchronising circuit comprising:a destination exchange local oscillator (46) for generating a local oscillator frequency, the synchronising circuit being characterised by a local Residual Time Stamp RTS generator (50) for generating a local RTS (51) from the network reference frequency (28) and the local oscillator frequency using said RTS method;a comparator (52) for determining a difference between the local RTS (51) and the source RTS (41) extracted from packets received at the destination exchange (10);and a local oscillator controller (54) for adjusting the frequency and phase of the local oscillator (46) in response to said difference in RTS values such as to maintain said difference substantially constant.
  2. 2
A synchronising circuit according to Claim 1 in which the local RTS generator (50) comprises:a counter (24) which is clocked by a clock (26) derived from the network reference frequency (28);aön divider (34) for dividing the frequency of the local oscillator by n;and a counter reader (32) for reading the counter output every n cycles of the local oscillator frequency, wherein said count read from the counter comprises the local RTS.
  3. 3
A synchronising circuit according to Claim 1 or Claim 2 in which the oscillator controller (54) is adapted to adjust the frequency of the local oscillator (46) by an amount defined in bits s -1 equal to the square of said difference.
  4. 5
A method of synchronising a local oscillator (46) at a destination exchange (10) to Constant Bit Rate CBR data streams for use in a multiplexed packet based telecommunications network capable of carrying Constant Bit Rate CBR data streams (2) between a source exchange (4) and the destination exchange (10) in the form of multiplexed packets (6), the method comprising:generating a source Residual Time Stamp RTS from a network reference frequency and the frequency of the CBR data streams using an RTS method;at the destination exchange extracting the source RTS from received packets (6), the method being characterised by generating a local RTS (51) from the network reference frequency and the local oscillator frequency using said RTS method;comparing the source RTS and local RTS to determine a difference in RTS values;and adjusting the frequency and phase of the local oscillator to maintain the difference in RTS values substantially constant.
  5. 6
A method according to Claim 5 and comprising generating the source RTS and local RTS using the Synchronous Residual Time Stamp (SRTS) method.
  6. 7
A method according to claims 5 or 6 and further comprising adjusting the frequency of the local oscillator by an amount defined in bits -1 equal to the square of said difference.
  7. 8
A method according to any one of claims 5, 6 or 7 and further comprising adjusting the phase of the local oscillator by an amount defined in bits s -1 such that the phase stabilises at substantially the same time as the frequency.
