  1. 1
An apparatus for finding objects in a computer including a display (18) and a pointing device (13) with which a user drags a pointer (50) on the display (18), characterized by:an input that receives an input signal to indicate a drag operation, said input being coupled to said computer;memory (15) that stores a plurality of objects including enclosures in the memory, wherein said enclosures comprise objects which may enclose other objects, said memory being coupled to said computer;window opening logic, coupled with the display (18), that draws windows (23, 52, 56, 63) on the display (18) corresponding to opened enclosures, wherein a window for an opened enclosure includes identifiers (27, 55, 62) within the window corresponding to objects enclosed by the opened enclosure;temporary window logic, coupled to the display (18) and the pointing device (13), that opens a temporary window (25) for a particular enclosure to display identifiers within the temporary window (25) corresponding to objects enclosed by the particular enclosure, in response to a drag during a drag operation of the pointer (50) over an identifier (55) corresponding to the particular enclosure;and logic, coupled to the display, that determines whether the display (18) includes an existing window (25) for the particular enclosure during the drag operation to open a temporary window (25), and if so, then removes the existing window (25) from the display (18).
  2. 5
An apparatus for finding objects in a computer including a display (18) and a pointing device (13) with which a user drags a pointer (50) on the display (18), characterized by:an input that receives an input signal to indicate a drag operation, the drag operation comprising associating an object with the pointer (50), the input being coupled to the computer;memory (15) that stores a plurality of objects including enclosures in the memory, wherein enclosures comprise objects which may enclose other objects, the memory (15) being coupled to the computer;window opening logic, coupled with the display (18), that draws windows on the display (18) corresponding to opened enclosures, wherein a window for an opened enclosure includes identifiers (55, 62) within the window corresponding to objects enclosed by the opened enclosure;a particular enclosure having an identifier (55), the identifier for the particular enclosure displayed within one of the windows (52);and temporary window logic, coupled to the display (18) and the pointing device (13), that opens a temporary window (56) for the particular enclosure to display identifiers within the temporary window (56) corresponding to objects enclosed by the particular enclosure, in response to a drag during the drag operation of the pointer (50) over the identifier (55) corresponding to the particular enclosure.
  3. 20
An apparatus for finding objects within a hierarchy of enclosures in a computer including a display (18) and a pointing device (13) with which a user drags a pointer (50) on the display (18), characterized by:memory (15) to store a plurality of objects (26, 27) including at least one hierarchy of enclosures (27, 55) in the memory, wherein enclosures (27, 55) comprise objects which may enclose other objects;window opening logic, coupled with the display (18), that draws windows (52, 56, 63) on the display (18) corresponding to opened enclosures, wherein a window for an opened enclosure includes identifiers (27, 55, 62) within the window corresponding to objects enclosed by the opened enclosure;an input to receive an input signal to indicate a drag operation;temporary window opening logic, coupled to the display (18) and the pointing device that opens a current temporary window (56) for a particular enclosure to display identifiers within the current temporary window corresponding to objects enclosed by the particular enclosure, in response to a drag during a drag operation of the pointer (50) over an identifier (55) corresponding to the particular enclosure, including logic that maintains a hierarchy of opened temporary windows and the current temporary window;and temporary window closing logic, coupled to the temporary window opening logic and the pointing device, that closes the current temporary window (56) in response to a drag during the drag operation of the pointer (50) outside the current temporary window (56).
  4. 39
A method for finding objects in a computer including a display (18) and a pointing device (13) with which a user drags a pointer (50) on the display (18), characterized by:performing a drag operation, the drag operation comprising associating an object with the pointer (50);storing in a memory a plurality of objects including enclosures, wherein enclosures comprise objects which may enclose other objects;displaying windows (23, 24) on the display corresponding to open enclosures, wherein a window for an opened enclosure includes identifiers (26, 27) within the window (23) corresponding to objects enclosed by the opened enclosure;displaying an identifier (27) corresponding to a particular enclosure within one of the windows (23);and opening a temporary window (52) for the particular enclosure to display identifiers (55) within the temporary window corresponding to objects enclosed by the particular enclosure, in response to a drag during the drag operation of the pointer (50) over an identifier (27) corresponding to the particular enclosure.
