A checkout system of this invention includes a checkout lane (21-1) including a belt conveyor (24) for carrying articles in one direction, feature extraction means (29, 30, 202, 204, 206) for extracting the feature of an article carried by the belt conveyor (24), and article registering means (31, 202, 204, 206) for recognizing and registering an article based on the feature of the article extracted by the feature extraction means (29, 30, 202, 204, 206); and a remote terminal device (41) disposed in position apart from the checkout lane (21-1), for displaying the feature of an article which cannot be recognized by the article registering means (31, 202, 204, 206) of the checkout lane (21-1) and designating an article having the feature. The article registering means (31, 202, 204, 206) provided in the checkout lane (21-1) includes auxiliary registering means (202, 204, 206) for registering an article designated by the remote terminal device (41).
