Treatment of lubricating oil intermediates.

Abstract

The present invention describes a process for reducing the chlorine content of a chlorinated member of polypropylene, polyisobutylene, a mixture of polypropylene and polypropylene succinic anhydride or a mixture of polyisobutylene and polyisobutylene succinic anhydride; including the step of treating any of the above or mixtures thereof with heat for a specified period of time.

10 claims: 7 independent, 3 dependent

  1. 1
A process of reducing the chlorine content of a member of an initial mixture selected from the group consisting of a hydrocarbyl compound and a hydrocarbyl substituted succinic acylating agent and mixtures thereof wherein the hydrocarbyl substituent of the hydrocarbyl substituted succinic acylating agent has an Mn value of 1300 to about 5000 and an Mw/Mn value of about 1.5 to about 4 provided further that there are at least about 1.3 succinic groups for each equivalent weight of the groups derived from the hydrocarbyl substituent wherein the member of the initial mixture is contacted with an inert gas for at least about 4 hours at a temperature of at least about 195°C to give a resultant mixture of reduced chlorine content.
  2. 4
The process of any preceding claim wherein said inert gas is nitrogen.
  3. 5
The process of any preceding claim wherein the chlorine content of said chlorine-containing product is from 0.05% to 2% by weight, and said chlorine-containing product is a 20:1 to 1:20 weight ratio mixture of a polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride and polyisobutylene.
  4. 6
The process of any preceding claim wherein said hydrocarbyl-substituted succinic acylating agent contains at least 1.3 succinic groups for each equivalent weight of the hydrocarbyl group of said hydrocarbyl-substituted succinic acylating agent.
  5. 7
The process of any preceding claim wherein the chlorine content of said chlorine-containing product is reduced by at least 35% by weight.
  6. 8
A product made by the process of any preceding claim.
  7. 9
A product made by the process of any one of claims 1 to 7 wherein said product is further reacted with a polyamine, a polyol or a mixture thereof.
