    A digital video and audio signal recording and reproducing device for recording on and reproducing from a recording medium having a recording format with a first recording area (VIDEO DATA) for recording a coded video signal, a second recording area (AUDIO DATA) for recording a coded audio signal, a third recording area (VAUX) for recording video-associated information, and a fourth recording area (AAUX) for recording audio-associated information, the device comprising:means (1-10) for coding the video signal and recording it in said first recording area (VIDEO DATA);means (11-14) for coding the audio signal and recording it in said second recording area (AUDIO DATA);means (15, 27) for recording video-associated information inserted in a vertical blanking period of said video signal in said third recording area (VAUX);means (15, 27) for recording audio-associated information inserted in a vertical blanking period of said video signal in said fourth recording area (AAUX);means (31-39, 54-64) for reproducing the coded video signal from said first recording area (VIDEO DATA) and decoding the video signal;means (31-39, 67-70) for reproducing the coded audio signal from said second recording area (AUDIO DATA) and decoding the audio signal;means (71) for reproducing the video-associated information from said third recording area (VAUX) and reading out said video-associated information;and means (71) for reproducing the audio-associated information from said fourth recording area (AAUX) and reading out said audio-associated information;wherein the video-associated information in said third recording area is in different synchronization blocks from the video signal in the first recording area, whereas the audio-associated information in said fourth recording area is combined into the same synchronization blocks as the audio signal in the second recording area.
