EP0657147A2

Non-migrating vascular prosthesis and minimally invasive placement system therefor.

Abstract

A graft assembly 10 for securely positioning a graft 20 at a predetermined location across an abdominal aortic aneurysm. The assembly includes a resilient self-expanding anchor 30 that is secured to the graft. The anchor is characterized as being at least as long as the graft, and further as being adapted to be removed or repositioned at any time prior to complete deployment in the patient.

19 claims: 6 independent, 13 dependent

  1. 1
A removable repair assembly for placement in a blood vessel which comprises:a graft having a proximal end, a distal end, and an axial length;and    an anchor having a proximal end, a distal end and an axial length at least equal to that of the graft, wherein at least the proximal end and the distal end of the anchor are resiliently expandable and connected to each other by at least two longitudinal segments, each of the segments extending between the proximal and distal ends of the anchor and further being constructed and arranged to transmit a radial compression force from one end of the anchor to the other.
  2. 6
A repair assembly as in any one the preceding claims wherein the anchor is constructed to have a resilient expansion force along its entire length.
  3. 10
A repair assembly as in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the anchor comprises a self-expanding proximal segment and a self-expanding distal segment, the segments being connected by at least one longitudinal strut.
  4. 12
A repair assembly as in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the anchor comprises a single continuous segment of wire having a plurality of bends at each end of the anchor, each bend being joined to two longitudinal wire segments, wherein each longitudinal wire segment is joined to an adjacent longitudinal wire segment.
  5. 15
An abdominal aortic repair device comprising:a cylindrical graft that is adapted to be positioned within a blood vessel, the graft having a proximal end, a distal end, and an axial length;and    a self-expanding anchor secured to the graft, the anchor adapted to inhibit migration of the graft once it is properly positioned at a desired location in a blood vessel,    wherein the anchor has a proximal end, a distal end and an axial length at least equal to that of the graft,    wherein least the proximal end and the distal end of the anchor are resiliently expandable and connected to each other by at least two longitudinal segments;wherein each of the segments extends between the proximal and distal ends of the anchor, and    wherein each of the segments is constructed and arranged to transmit a radial compression force from one end of the anchor to the other.
  6. 16
A device for positioning a resiliently expandable implant within a blood vessel which comprises:a) a tubular sheath for maintaining the implant in a radially compressed configuration, the sheath having a proximal end and a distal end and being open at its distal end and axially moveable relative to the implant, b) a stay positioned within the proximal end of the sheath to retain the implant as the sheath is withdrawn, the sheath being axially moveable relative to the stay;and c) an implant retainer adapted to engage the implant, the sheath being axially moveable relative to the retainer and the retainer being stationary relative to the stay.
