    Apparatus for using compressed codes for recorder preprogramming that comprises:a receiver (50);means (964) for recording;a cable box for channel selection;means (20) for entering into said receiver compressed codes each having at least one digit and each representative of, and compressed in length from, the combination of channel, time-of-day, date and length commands for a program;control means (954) comprising: means (60) for decoding each compressed code into channel, date, time and length commands;means (62) for storing said channel, date, time-of-day and length commands;a clock (42) with an output as a function of time;means (60) for reordering said channel, time-of-day, date and length commands in said means (62) for storing into temporal order;means (60) for comparing said date and time-of-day commands of the temporally earliest in time program entry in said means (62) for storing to the output of the clock (42) for a predetermined relation;means (962) for transmitting record ON commands to said means for recording after the predetermined relationship is found to exist;means (962) for transmitting said channel commands to the cable box after the predetermined relationship is found to exist;means (40) for measuring length of time from transmitting a record ON command;and means (952) for transmitting record OFF commands to said means (964) for recording when the measured length of time of recording has a predetermined compared relation with said length command, characterized in that the receiver (50) comprises a television (950), in that the control means (954) is located in the television (950), in that the recording means (964) is arranged external to the television (950), in that the means (962) for transmitting record ON commands and the means for transmitting record OFF commands is located in the television (950) to transmit to the externally arranged recording means (964), in that the cable box is arranged external to the television (950) and in that the means for transmitting said channel commands is located in said television (950) to transmit to the externally arranged cable box.

    Apparatus for using compressed codes for recorder preprogramming that comprises:a receiver (50);means (964) for recording;a satellite receiver for channel selection;means (20) for entering into said receiver compressed codes each having at least one digit and each representative of, and compressed in length from, the combination of channel, time-of-day, date and length commands for a program;control means (954) comprising: means (60) for decoding each compressed code into channel, date, time and length commands;means (62) for storing said channel, date, time-of-day and length commands;a clock (42) with an output as a function of time;means (60) for reordering said channel, time-of-day, date and length commands in said means (62) for storing into temporal order;means (60) for comparing said date and time-of-day commands of the temporally earliest in time program entry in said means (62) for storing to the output of the clock (42) for a predetermined relation;means (962) for transmitting record ON commands to said means for recording after the predetermined relationship is found to exist;means (962) for transmitting said channel commands to the satellite receiver after the predetermined relationship is found to exist;means (40) for measuring length of time from transmitting a record ON command;and means (952) for transmitting record OFF commands to said means (964) for recording when the measured length of time of recording has a predetermined compared relation with said length command, characterized in that the receiver (50) comprises a television (950), in that the control means (954) is located in the television (950), in that the recording means (964) is arranged external to the television (950), in that the means (962) for transmitting record ON commands and the means for transmitting record OFF commands is located in the television (950) to transmit to the externally arranged recording means (964), in that the satellite receiver is arranged external to the television (950) and in that the means for transmitting said channel commands is located in said television (950) to transmit to the externally arranged satellite receiver.

    Apparatus according to Claim 1, characterised in that said means (20) for entering comprises a remote controller (956).

    A method of permitting programs to be preprogrammed for recording by a recorder for time shifted viewing, comprising the steps of:providing a controller (954) having a means for transmitting signals and a clock (42) with an output as a function of time;entering into said controller (954) compressed codes each having at least one digit and each representative of, and compressed in length from, the combination of channel, time-of-day, date and length commands for a program;decoding each compressed code to obtain channel, time-of-day, date and length commands;providing a memory (62);storing each said channel, time-of-day, date and length commands into said memory (62);reordering said channel, time-of-day, date and length commands in said memory (62) into temporal order;comparing the date and time-of-day commands of the temporally earliest in time entry in said memory to the output of the clock for a predetermined relation;transmitting channel commands rom said controller to a cable box after the predetermined relationship is found to exist;transmitting record ON commands from said controller to a recorder after the predetermined is found to exist;selecting the channel at the cable box;recording the program;measuring length of time from transmitting record on command;and transmitting record OFF commands from said controller to the recorder when the measured length of time has a predetermined compared relation with said length command, characterized in that said controller is located in a television receiver (950), and the cable box and recorder are arranged external to the television (950).

    A method of permitting programs to be preprogrammed for recording by a recorder for time shifted viewing, comprising the steps of:providing a controller (954) having a means for transmitting signals and a clock (42) with an output as a function of time;entering into said controller (954) compressed codes each having at least one digit and each representative of, and compressed in length from, the combination of channel, time-of-day, date and length commands for a program;decoding each compressed code to obtain channel, time-of-day, date and length commands;providing a memory (62);storing each said channel, time-of-day, date and length commands into said memory (62);reordering said channel, time-of-day, date and length commands in said memory (62) into temporal order;comparing the date and time-of-day commands of the temporally earliest in time entry in said memory to the output of the clock for a predetermined relation;transmitting channel commands from said controller to a satellite receiver after the predetermined relationship is found to exist;transmitting record ON commands from said controller to a recorder after the predetermined is found to exist;selecting the channel at the satellite receiver;recording the program;measuring length of time from transmitting record on command;and transmitting record OFF commands from said controller to the recorder when the measured length of time has a predetermined compared relation with said length command, characterized in that said controller is located in a television receiver (950), and the satellite receiver and recorder are arranged external to the television (950).

    A method according to any one of Claims 11-12, characterised in that the step of recording is performed by a video cassette recorder.

    A method according to any one of Claims 11-12, characterised in that the step of transmitting is performed by at least one infrared transmitter transmitting in multiple directions.

    A method according to any one of Claims 11-12, characterised in that the step of transmitting is performed by an Infrared transmitter attached to a cable.

    A method according to any one of Claims 11-12, characterised in that the step of decoding each compressed code to obtain channel, time-of-day, date and length commands comprises the steps of:permuting said compressed code to obtain a permuted compressed code;converting groups of digits of said permuted compressed code to groups of binary digits;and concatenating said groups of binary digits into one binary number;reordering the bits In said binary number to obtain a reordered binary compressed code;grouping said reordered binary compressed code into channel, date, time and length priority numbers;and deriving said channel, day, time-of-day and length commands from said channel, date, time and length priority numbers.

    A method according to Claim 17, characterised in that the step of permuting said compressed code further comprises:permuting said compressed code as function of the output of a clock.

    A method according to Claim 17, characterised by the step of:extracting a day code from said compressed code;and In that the said day code is used In performing said step of permuting said compressed code.
