EP0592984A2

A keyboard for the remote control of machine tools and the like.

Abstract

The keyboard comprises a plurality of keys and/or manual controls connected to one or more boards which can generate coded electrical signals indicative of the commands put into effect by the operation of the keys and/or the manual controls. The keys and/or controls are divided into at least two sets (18, 20) disposed on at least two faces (14, 16) of a body (10) which can rotate in a tubular casing (6, 8) having a display window (26). The faces (14, 16) can be positioned in the display window (26) in turn as a result of the rotation of the rotary body (10).

11 claims: 1 independent, 10 dependent

  1. 1
A keyboard for the remote control of machine tools and the like, comprising a plurality of keys (18, 20) and/or controls (24) connected to one or more boards (22) which can generate coded electrical signals indicative of the commands put into effect by the operation of the keys and/or controls, characterized in that the keys and/or controls are divided into at least two sets (18, 20) disposed on at least two faces (14, 16) of a body (10) which can rotate within a tubular casing (6, 8) having a display window (26), the faces (14, 16) being positionable in the display window (26) in turn as a result of the rotation of the rotary body (10).
  2. 2
A keyboard according to Claim 1, characterized in that the rotary body (10) is biased by resilient means (54) towards at least two stable equilibrium positions in each of which one of the faces (14, 16) is in the display window (26).
  3. 3
A keyboard according to Claim 2, characterized in that the rotary body (10) has an axial appendage (52) which is fixed to the rotary body, parallel to and spaced from the axis of rotation of the body (10), the appendage (52) being able to abut a stop surface (62) at two points situated on opposite sides of the axis of rotation of the body (10), the resilient means comprising a tension spring (54) having a first end anchored to the axial appendage (52) and a second end anchored to an element (56) which is fixed relative to the casing (6, 8), the spring (54) being able to restrain the appendage (52) resiliently against the stop surface (60) in the two positions in which the rotary body (10) is in stable equilibrium.
  4. 4
A keyboard according to Claim 3, characterized in that said axial appendage (52) cooperates with a hand-operable rotary entrainment member (70) which can move the appendage (52) from a first of its points of contact with the stop surface (60), causing the tension spring (54) to extend, to a point in which its appendage is biased by the spring (54) towards its second point of contact with the stop surface (60).
  5. 5
A keyboard according to Claim 1, characterized in that the rotary body (10) comprises at least one wheel-like control member (24) having a hand-operable portion which projects from each of the faces (14, 16).
  6. 6
A keyboard according to Claim 1, characterized in that it comprises an eyelid-like protective screen (40) which is rotatable in the tubular casing (6, 8) coaxially with the rotary body (10) and can close the display window (26).
  7. 7
A keyboard according to Claim 1, characterized in that the tubular casing is formed by two shells (6, 8) which have semicircular cross-sections and the ends of which define two seats (31) for respective bearings (30) for supporting the rotary body (10).
  8. 8
A keyboard according to Claim 1, characterized in that it comprises a support element (42) with a substantially C-shaped cross-section in which the tubular casing (6, 8) can be snap-engaged.
  9. 9
A keyboard according to Claim 8, characterized in that the support element (42) has a pair of protective flanges (48) arranged in a manner such that a line (50) joining the ends of the flanges (48) in a cross-section in a plane perpendicular to the axis (28) of the tubular casing (6, 8) lies outside the profile of the tubular casing (6, 8).
  10. 10
A keyboard according to Claim 8, characterized in that at least one strip (46) of soft material with good vibration-damping capability is interposed between the support element (42) and the tubular casing (6, 8).
  11. 11
A keyboard according to Claim 1, characterized in that means (38) are disposed within the casing (6, 8) for illuminating the face of the rotary body (10) which is situated in the display window (26).
