21 claims: 3 independent, 18 dependent

  1. 1
A fabric having a first major surface and a second major surface, at least one of said first and second major surfaces of said fabric comprising a polymeric material (16) and an odor control material (18), characterized in that the polymeric material (16) is arranged in a discontinuous pattern, said odor control material (18) being affixed thereto.
  2. 2
A fabric according to Claim 1 wherein said fabric is a nonwoven fabric (12).
  3. 3
A nonwoven fabric according to Claim 2 which comprises fibers selected from the group consisting of hydrophilic fibers, hydrophobic fibers and blends of hydrophilic and hydrophobic fibers.
  4. 4
A fabric according to Claim 1 wherein said odor control material (18) is selected from the group consisting of sodium bicarbonate, zeolites, ion exchange resins and activated charcoal.
  5. 5
A fabric according to Claim 1 wherein said odor control material (18) is sodium bicarbonate.
  6. 6
A fabric according to Claim 1 wherein said polymeric material (16) comprises polyvinyl chloride.
  7. 7
An absorbent product comprising an absorbent core (34), a liquid-impermeable backing sheet (28) and a liquid-permeable cover sheet (24), said absorbent core (34) being secured between said backing sheet (28) and said cover sheet (24), said cover sheet (24) comprising a fabric having a first major surface constituting the outer surface of said absorbent product, characterized in that said first major surface of said cover sheet comprises a polymeric material (16) arranged in a discontinuous pattern, said polymeric material having an odor control material (18) affixed thereto.
  8. 8
The absorbent product of Claim 7 wherein said polymeric material (16) comprises a polymer selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl chloride and polyvinyl chloride copolymers.
  9. 9
The absorbent product of Claim 7 wherein said polymeric material (16) comprises polyvinyl chloride.
  10. 10
The absorbent product of Claim 7 wherein said polymeric material (16) is arranged in a pattern of tiny dots.
  11. 11
The absorbent product of Claim 7 wherein said odor control material (18) is selected from the group consisting of sodium bicarbonate, zeolites, ion exchange resins and activated charcoal.
  12. 12
The absorbent product of Claim 7 wherein said odor control material (18) comprises sodium bicarbonate.
  13. 13
The absorbent product of Claim 7 wherein said polymeric material (16) is derived from a plastisol.
  14. 14
The absorbent product of Claim 7 wherein said plastisol comprises polyvinyl chloride.
  15. 15
The absorbent product of Claim 7 wherein said cover sheet is a nonwoven fabric;said polymeric material (16) is derived from a plastisol comprising polyvinyl chloride and is arranged on said first major surface in a discontinuous pattern;and said odor control material (18) is sodium bicarbonate.
  16. 16
The absorbent product of Claim 7 in which said backing sheet (28) comprises an adhesive (26), said adhesive (26) being protected prior to use of said product by a removably adhered release strip (30).
  17. 17
A process for preparing a nonwoven fabric with an odor control material (18), said process including the steps of:providing a starting nonwoven fabric having a first major surface and a second major surface, applying a polymeric material (16) to one of said first and second major surfaces and applying said odor control material (18) to said polymeric material (16), characterized by applying the polymeric material (16) in a discontinuous pattern to at least one of said first and second major surfaces while said polymeric material (16) is in its wet or tacky state, applying said odor control material (18) to said wet or tacky polymeric material (16);and causing said polymeric material (16) to fuse, whereby said odor control material (18) is affixed to the surface of said polymeric material (16).
  18. 18
The process of Claim 17 wherein said polymeric material (16) is caused to fuse by exposure to short wavelength infrared radiation.
  19. 19
The process of Claim 17 wherein said polymeric material (16) is derived from a polyvinyl chloride plastisol.
  20. 20
The process of Claim 17 wherein said odor control material (18) comprises sodium bicarbonate.
  21. 21
The process of Claim 17 wherein said odor control material (18) is sodium bicarbonate, said polymeric material (16) is derived from a polyvinyl chloride plastisol and said polymeric material (16) is caused to fuse by exposure to short wavelength infrared radiation.
