12 claims: 5 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
A linear motor assembly having enhanced mechanical stiffness, the assembly comprising:(a) at least one pair of rigidly fixed and interconnected tandem rails (14, 15) defining a first axis of movement and spaced apart normal to such first axis;(b) at least one pair of tied frames (20, 21) movable along said pair of rails (14, 15);(c) at least one linear motor (26) effective to operate between each rail and frame to selectively move said frames: (d) bearings (60) supported between each rail and each frame;(e) means (27, 28) supported by said tied frames (20, 21) defining other axes of movement actuated by other linear motors, characterised in that - said frames (20, 21) are C-shaped and engage round respective rails (14, 15), each frame presenting at least two pairs of inwardly-facing opposed parallel bearing surfaces;said pairs of opposed parallel bearing surfaces comprise a pair (54, 55;56, 57) at each end of the frame facing across the span of the frame;- said bearings (60) are recirculating roller bearing units supported between each rail and each bearing surface of each frame;and that - said bearings (60) are preloaded with an interference load permitting bearing movement.
  2. 4
An assembly as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said interference loading provides for an interference fit in the range of 0.005 to 0.00125 cm (0.0002 to 0.0005 inches).
  3. 5
An assembly as claimed in any preceding claim wherein said linear motor (26) is a brushless DC motor having an armature coil supported by a frame and a row of permanent magnets adapted to cooperate with said armature coil supported by said tied rails.
  4. 6
An assembly as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said first axis is an X-axis for linear movement and said means (e) (27, 28) provides other axes mutually perpendicular to said X-axis.
  5. 10
An assembly as claimed in any of claims 7 to 9, wherein said means (e) (27, 28) Comprises a C-section slide (72) mounted on a pair of tandem rails (9) extending between and perpendicular to said tied frames for movement along a Y-axis, said slide carrying a C-section saddle (74) in which is mounted a ram (75) arranged to slide therein along a third perpendicular axis (Z-axis) and carrying a rotary-driven spindle (11) for a drilling tool, said slide (72) and said ram (75) being selectively movable by said other linear motors and being respectively supported between opposed pairs of bearing surfaces on recirculating roller bearings preloaded with an interference load similarly to the support of the tied frames (20, 21) on their respective rails (14, 15), the assembly forming a rapid-positioning drilling assembly.
