EP0560587A2

Sign language translation system and method.

Abstract

A sign language translation system and method not only recognizes words of a sign language but also supplements omitted words between the words of the sign language, to thereby generate a spoken language. The sign language translation system has an input unit (105) for inputting at least the motion of hands, a language generating unit (102) responsive to the inputted motion of hands for recognizing the words corresponding to the motion of hands and generating a spoken language using the relationship between the recognized words, and an output unit (103) for outputting the generated spoken language. The sign language translation system and method can translate a sign language into an easy-to-understand spoken language.

21 claims: 4 independent, 17 dependent

  1. 1
A sign language translation system, comprising:input means for inputting at least the motion of hands;language generating means for recognizing the words corresponding to said inputted motion of hands and generating a spoken language using the relationship between said recognized words;and output means for outputting said generated spoken language.
  2. 2
A sign language translation system according to Claim 1, wherein said language generating means includes:word recognizing means for recognizing the words corresponding to the motion of hands;dependence analyzing means for analyzing the dependence relationship between said recognized words;and omission/supplement means for supplementing omitted words and providing the conjugations of conjugative words, in accordance with said analyzed results.
  3. 3
A sign language translation system according to Claim 1, wherein said input means uses an input device for inputting the motion of hands at a predetermined time interval.
  4. 4
A sign language translation system according to Claim 3, wherein said input means uses gloves for converting the flection of fingers of right and left hands, the positions and directions of the right and left hands, into electrical signals.
  5. 5
A sign language translation system according to Claim 3, wherein said input means uses a TV camera.
  6. 6
A sign language translation system according to Claim 2, wherein said word recognizing means uses a neural network.
  7. 7
A sign language translation system according to Claim 2, wherein said word recognizing means uses a DP matching scheme.
  8. 8
Asign language translation system according to Claim 2, wherein when the recognition result of said word recognizing means is unable to identify a final single word, a plurality of word candidates are sent to said dependence analyzing means.
  9. 9
A sign language translation system according to Claim 2, wherein said dependence analyzing means analyzes the dependence relationship between substantives basing upon that one substantive is dependent on another substantive having a predetermined dependence relationship.
  10. 10
A sign language translation system according to Claim 2, wherein said omission/supplement means supplements omitted words and provides the conjugations of conjugative words, in accordance with the words recognized by said word recognizing means and an omission/supplement rule determined by said dependence analyzing means.
  11. 11
A sign language translation system according to Claim 2, wherein each said omitted word to be supplemented is at least one of an auxiliary verb, postposition, pseudo noun, and conjunction, respectively representing the semantic and time sequential relationships between words.
  12. 12
A sign language translation system according to Claim 1, wherein said output means outputs said generated spoken language in at least one of a text representation and voice expression.
  13. 13
A sign language translation system according to Claim 1, wherein said output means outputs synthesized images of the motion corresponding to a sign language.
  14. 14
A sign language translation system according to Claim 1, wherein said output means outputs the train of words recognized when a spoken language cannot be generated.
  15. 15
A sign language translation system, comprising:input means for inputting at least the motion of hands;means for recognizing the words corresponding to the said inputted motion of hands;means for analyzing the dependence between said recognized words by using a word dictionary storing the parts of speech and meanings of words and a case dictionary for defining the dependable case of each conjugative word;and means for supplementing omitted words in the motion of hands by using said case dictionary, an omission/supplement rule indicating a supplement method and satisfying a designated condition, and a conjugation table for defining the conjugations of each conjugative word, and generating a spoken language.
  16. 16
A sign language translation method comprising the steps of:inputting the motion of hands;recognizing the words corresponding to said inputted motion of hands;generating a spoken language using the dependence between said recognized words;and outputting said generated spoken language.
  17. 17
A sign language translation method according to Claim 16, wherein the dependence between said recognized words is analyzed using said recognized results, and a predetermined process is executed using said analyzed results to generate said spoken language.
  18. 18
A sign language translation method according to Claim 17, wherein said spoken language is generated by supplementing omitted words and providing the conjugations of a conjugative word by using said analyzed results.
  19. 19
A sign language translation method according to Claim 18, wherein spatial information representing a pronoun and time lapse entered in a sign language is recognized to translate said spatial information into a corresponding word.
  20. 20
Asign language translation method according to Claim 16, wherein the motion of hands in a sign language is read by using one of a pair of gloves and a TV camera, and the read motion of hands is recognized by a CPU to output a spoken language represented by the motion of hands on a display.
  21. 21
A sign language translation method comprising the steps of:inputting the motion of hands;recognizing the words corresponding to the inputted motion of hands;obtaining the part of speech and meaning of each said recognized word while referring to a word dictionary storing the parts of speech and meanings of words, checking from said part of speech and meaning whether each said recognized word is a conjugative word, and in the case of a conjugative word, analyzing the dependence between said recognized words by using a case dictionary defining the dependable case of said conjugative word;and supplementing omitted words in the motion of hands by using an omission/supplement rule indicating a supplement method and satisfying a designated condition, and a conjugation table for defining the conjugations of each conjugative word, and generating a spoken language.
