Optical scanning apparatus and method.

Abstract

The invention provides for an optical scanning apparatus and method for use in a bar code label in which a motor driven hollow drive shaft (68) has laser light beams projected therethrough from a laser source (45) positioned adjacent one end of the drive shaft. Mounted on the other end of the drive shaft (68) is a deflecting member (84) which includes a first reflecting surface (86) for deflecting the laser light beams outwardly towards a ring of mirrors (78) each of which is located in a plane parallel to the axis of the drive shaft (68). The light beams deflected from the ring of mirrors (78) are directed towards a second reflecting surface (88) on the deflecting member (84) which surface deflects the received scanning light beams in a direction parallel to the axis (72) of the hollow drive shaft (68) thereby forming a scan pattern comprising a plurality of intersecting scan lines.

9 claims: 4 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
Optical scanner apparatus (26) comprising means (45) for transmitting a light beam along a first light path, rotatably mounted deflection means (84) having a first deflecting surface (86) for rotation in said first light path and arranged to deflect said light beam from said first light path along a second light path towards a plurality of reflecting elements (78) located around said deflection means (84) to reflect said light beam along a third light path, characterized in that said deflection means (84) has a second deflection surface (88) for rotation in said third path for deflecting said light beams in the same direction as said first light path for forming a scan pattern having a plurality of intersecting scan lines.
  2. 5
Apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that said reflecting elements (78) comprise a ring or mirrors each of which is mounted in a plane parallel to the spin axis of said rotatably mounted deflection means (84).
  3. 6
Apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that said first (86) and second (88) deflecting surfaces of said deflecting means (84) and said plurality of reflecting elements are orientated so that said second and third light paths are substantially perpendicular to said first light path.
  4. 7
A method of forming an optical scan pattern comprising transmitting a light beam along a first light path and rotating deflection means (84) having a first deflection surface (86) about a spin axis parallel to said first light path to deflect said light beam along a second light path, characterized by reflecting said light beam travelling along said second light path along a third light path towards a second surface (88) of said deflection means (84) to deflect said light beam along a forth light path in the same direction of said first light path so form a scan pattern.
