Calibration device for machine.

Abstract

Telescopic ball bar 24 has a male member provided by a sphere 22 at one end and a female member provided by a pair of forks 30 at the other. The ball bar is attached to the spindle 10 of a machine tool by a universal pivotal coupling between the sphere 22 and a magnetic socket 14 retained on the spindle 10. The ball bar 24 is attached to the table by a further universal pivotal coupling between a sphere 28 retained on the table 12 in a clamping device 40, and the forks 30. In use, the spindle is operated to move in a circular path about a centre defined by the centre of the sphere 28. Any deviation of the spindle movement from such a circular path will be detected by a transducer 36, provided in the bar 24, which bears against the surface of the sphere 28. The position of the centre of the sphere 28 is determined by bringing the sphere 28 into engagement with the socket 14, and measuring the position of the spindle 10 at that point. Easy engagement between the sphere 28 and the socket 14 is facilitated by the clamping device 40, which enables the sphere 28 to move relative to the table to engage the socket 14. Once the sphere 28 has engaged the socket 14 (and the position of its centre has been measured by measuring the position of the spindle 10), the sphere 28 may be clamped rigidly relative to the table 12 for a calibration operation.

25 claims: 6 independent, 19 dependent

  1. 1
Apparatus for calibrating a coordinate positioning machine, the machine having a table (12;112), and an arm (10;110) movable relative to the table (12;112) in at least two dimensions, the apparatus comprising:a male (28;128) and a female (14;114) support member, each adapted to be retained on one of the movable arm (10,110) and the table (12;112), transducer apparatus comprising an elongate telescopic bar (24;124) having a male coupling member (22;122) at one end for forming a universal pivotal connection with the female support member (14;114), and a female coupling member (30;130) at the other end for forming a universal pivotal connection with the male support member (28;128), and means for measuring the distance between said two male members (22,28;122,128).
  2. 4
Apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims wherein said female coupling member (30;130) is provided by a socket for a said spherical reference element.
  3. 8
Apparatus according to any one of claims 5 to 7 wherein each of said areas of surface (18;176;186) is provided by an individual support element (18;176;186).
  4. 12
Apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein said female coupling member (30;130) is provided by a pair of forks (30) extending parallel to the length of the bar (24;124), each of said forks (30), in use, engaging the surface of the male support member (28).
  5. 13
Apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims wherein retaining means (40;140) are provided for one of said support members (14,28;114,128), for permitting a range of 3-dimensional movement relative to the part of the machine on which said one support member (14,28;114,128) is retained and for rigidly and releasably retaining said one support member (14,28;114,128) in a position within said range.
  6. 17
A coupling apparatus for a ball-bar comprising a spherical male member (22,28;122,128) of ferromagnetic material, a socket (14;114,130) having a body (16;172;182) on which three areas of surface (18;176;186) are supported, and a magnet (20;174;184) for urging the spherical member (22;28;122;128) into contact with the areas of surface (18;176;186), wherein each of the areas of surface (18;176;186) is made of a material having a lower hardness than the material of the spherical male member (22;28;122;128).
  7. 24
A magnetic socket (14;30;130) for use with a ball-bar having a body supporting (16;172;182) three support elements (18;176;186), and a magnet for urging a spherical reference element (22;28;122;128) of a ball-bar into contact with the support elements (18;176;186), wherein each of the support elements is made of an alloy of copper.
  8. 25
