Optical transmitter.

Abstract

Optical transmitter comprising a control loop for fixing the bias current of the amount of light emitted by a laser diode 6, a cascade circuit 5 of the laser diode 6, a photodiode 7 and a variable gain factor amplifier 8 being included in the negative feedback path of the control loop. By feeding a modulation signal to the summator 4, the laser diode may be amplitude modulation. To avoid that the control loop cancels the mean value of the modulation signal, a cancelling signal c of such a magnitude that the output signal of the control amplifier is independent of the modulation signal is applied to the input of the control amplifier 3. For deriving this cancelling signal from the modulation signal in a fixed manner, the transfer factor of the negative feedback path is fixed by the transfer of the negative feedback path for an auxiliary signal, to be measured by means of a comparing circuit 12 and, on the basis of the result of this measurement, by adapting this transfer factor in that the gain of amplifier 8 is adjusted.

  2. 2
Optical transmitter as claimed in Claim 1, characterized in that the negative feedback path comprises a cascade connection of an electro-optical converter, an opto-electrical converter and an automatic gain control, in that an auxiliary signal is applied to a third input of the combining means;in that the transmitter comprises means for fixing the transfer factor of the cascade connection at a predetermined value on the basis of the output signal component part of the cascade connection which component originates from the auxiliary signal, by setting the gain factor of the automatic gain control at a correct value.
  3. 3
Transmitter as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the combining means comprise a summator.
  4. 4
Transmitter as claimed in Claim 1, 2 or 3, characterized in that the negative feedback path has a low-pass frequency characteristic and in that the cancelling signal, equal to the product of -1, the negative feedback path transfer factor and the mean value of the modulation signal are coupled to the output of the negative feedback path.
  5. 5
Transmitter as claimed in Claim 1, 2 or 3, characterized, in that the gain control has a low-pass frequency characteristic and in that the cancelling signal, which is equal to the product of -1, the transfer factor of the negative feedback path and the value of the modulation signal, are coupled to the output of the negative feedback path.
  6. 6
Transmitter as claimed in one of the preceding Claims, characterized in that the output of the opto-electrical converter is coupled to the input of the automatic gain control.
