Hypothesis and conclusion method to diagnose data communication network.

Abstract

An expert system (102) for diagnosing data communication networks (142). The expert system (102) operates according to a landmark data abstraction paradigm and a hypothesis and verification process (2602). According to the hypothesis and verification process (2602), the expert system (102) diagnoses data communication networks (142) by hypothesizing network problems (2302) and then verifying the hypothesized network problems (2302).

  1. 1
A computer-based method for diagnosing data communication networks (142), said method comprising the steps of:(a) hypothesizing (2506) network problems (2302);and(b) verifying (2510) said network problems (2302).
  2. 7
A computer-based method for diagnosing data communication networks (142), said method comprising the steps of:(a) selecting (2606) a primary landmark (2402);(b) collecting (2614) first network data (2304);(c) interpreting (2624) said first network data (2304) to determine whether said primary landmark (2402) exists;(d) hypothesizing (2628) one or more network problems (2302) when said primary landmark (2402) exists;(e) selecting (2636) one or more secondary landmarks (2402) according to said hypothesized network problems (2302);(f) collecting (2644) second network data (2304);(g) interpreting (2648) said second network data (2304) to determine whether said secondary landmarks (2402) exist;(h) confirming (2652) said hypothesized network problems (2302) when said secondary landmarks (2402) exist;and(i) rejecting (2666) said hypothesized network problems (2302) when said secondary landmarks (2402) do not exist.
  3. 8
A computer-based method for diagnosing data communication networks (142), said method comprising the steps of:(a) selecting (2606) a forward rule;(b) collecting (2614) first network data (2304);(c) interpreting (2624) said first network data (2304) to determine whether said forward rule is satisfied;(d) hypothesizing (2628) one or more network problems (2302) when said forward rule is satisfied;(e) selecting (2636) one or more backward rules according to said hypothesized network problems (2302);(f) collecting (2644) second network data (2304);(g) interpreting (2648) said second network data (2304) to determine whether said backward rules are satisfied;(h) confirming (2652) said hypothesized network problems (2302) when said backward rules are satisfied;and(i) rejecting (2666) said hypothesized network problems (2302) when said backward rules are not satisfied.
