  1. 1
A switching system comprising a switch unit (1) and a plurality of input lines (L10, ..., L13) and output lines (L52, L54, ..., L56), wherein said switch unit (1) includes a plurality of switch unit input ports (Si0, ..., Si3) and switch unit output ports (So0, ..., So3) having a first transmission rate, multiplexer means (12) for multiplexing and outputting as a single cell train a plurality of cell trains inputted from the switch unit input ports (L10, ..., L13), a shared buffer memory (11) for temporarily storing the cell trains outputted sequentially from the multiplexer means (12), demultiplexer means (13) for periodically distributing the cells read from the shared buffer memory (11) among the switch unit output ports (L52, L54, ..., L56), and a buffer memory control circuit (10) for controlling the read and write operations of cells with the shared buffer memory (11), said buffer memory control circuit (10) comprising control means (104, 105) for outputting an identifier for an output line to output cells read from the shared buffer memory (11), write control means (101, 103, L31, L32) for writing cell trains outputted from the multiplexer means (12) into the buffer memory (11) in such a manner that each cell forms a queue chain for each output line to be outputted on, and read control means (102, L33, L34) for reading cells from a queue chain in the shared buffer memory (12) in accordance with an output line identifier read sequentially from the control means (104, 105),    characterised in that at least one of the output lines (L52, L54, ..., L56) has a second transmission rate different from said first transmission rate, wherein at least one first conversion means (22, 23) is interposed between said one output line having said second transmission rate and at least one of said switch unit output ports (So0, ..., So3) having said first transmission rate for converting a cell train having said first transmission rate to a cell train having said second transmission rate, and wherein said control means (104, 105) of said buffer memory control circuit (10) comprises rewriteable control table means (104) for outputting said output line identifier in accordance with the timing of cell output to the switch unit output ports so that the output lines (L52, L54, ..., L56) are supplied with output cells in accordance with their transmission rates.
  2. 2
A switching system according claim 1, wherein said write control means includes first address memory means (101) for storing cell write addresses in the shared buffer memory (11) in accordance with an output line identifier, and address buffer means (103) for storing idle addresses of the shared buffer memory (11), and said read control means includes second address memory means (102) for storing cell read addresses from the shared buffer memory (11) in accordance with an output line identifier, wherein in accordance with a write address corresponding to an output line identifier read from the first address memory means (101) and contained in the header of the cell inputted from the multiplexer means (12), said input cell and an idle address to make up the next address outputted from the idle address buffer (103) are written into the shared buffer memory (11) by said write control means, and an idle address to make up the next address is stored in a position corresponding to the output line identifier in the first address memory means (101), and wherein in accordance with a read address read out from the second address memory means (102) and corresponding to an output line identifier read from the second address memory means (102) and outputted from the control table means (104), a cell and the next address are read from the shared buffer memory (11), said read address is stored in the idle address buffer (103), and the next address read from the shared buffer memory is stored in a position corresponding to the output line identifier of the second address memory means (102).
