  1. 1
    An optical system for scanning a light beam onto a symbol and detecting light returning from said symbol by retroreflection and providing electrical signals representing the symbol, the optical system comprising:a light source (130) providing said light beam;a photodetector (140) providing said electrical signals;a mirror system directing said light beam from said light source (130) to said symbol, and said returning light to said photodetector;said mirror system comprising fixed mirror means (128) comprising a first mirror surface (152) and a second mirror surface (138), and an oscillatory mirror (134) oscillatable around an axis of oscillation (162);said light beam scanning the symbol as said oscillatory mirror (134) oscillates to define a scan line having end points;said light beam being directed to said symbol along a first path (180) from said light source (130) to said first mirror surface (152);a second path (182) from said first mirror surface (152) to said oscillatory mirror (134), and a third path (184) from said oscillatory mirror (134) to said symbol;said second (182) and said third (184) paths being in a same plane when said light beam is intermediate with respect to said end points;said return light being directed from said second mirror surface (138) to said photodetector (140), said photodetector (140) being disposed to define a fourth path (186) in said plane when said light beam is intermediate with respect to said end points;characterized in that said first path (180) is at an acute angle to said plane;said light returning from said symbol illuminates said oscillatory mirror (134) and is reflected therefrom to said second mirror surface (138) ;and the mirror surfaces (138, 152) are arranged without substantial interspace.
  2. 4
    An optical system according to any of the claims 1 to 3, characterized in that said symbol is a bar code and said electrical signals correspond to said bar code;
  3. 5
    An optical system according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that the axis of oscillation (162) is in said plane, and said oscillatory mirror (134) is oscillated such that said light beam scans said bar code.
