Automatic signature verification.

Abstract

A method of automatically verifying a signature of an individual with a computer is described. A digitized image with a number of picture elements is established from the signature to be verified. Parameter values to be verified are calculated from this digitized image and are compared with corresponding reference parameter values which were calculated and stored previously. Depending on a comparison of the reference parameter values and the parameter values to be verified it is decided if the signature to be verified is true or false. Various possibilities are described for the calculation of significant parameters. The gravity-center of all densities of all rows and all columns of the digitized image is a parameter which can be used for a preselection. Centers-of-gravity, gravity lines, maximum values and maximum lines, etc. are further significant parameters. Parameters with a very high reliability can be generated by calculating second order polynomials which describe segments of the signature.

  2. 4
The method of one of claims 1 to 3, wherein said establishing step comprises:aligning said digitized image with respect to the angle of said signature (104).
  3. 5
The method of one of claims 1 to 4, wherein said establishing step comprises:normalizing said digitized image with respect to the size of said signature (105).
  4. 6
The method of one of claims 1 to 5, wherein said establishing step comprises:reducing the size of the raster of said digitized image (106).
  5. 7
The method of one of claims 1 to 6, wherein said generating step comprises:evaluating a respective density of all picture elements of said digitized image.
  6. 10
The method of one of claims 7 to 9, further comprising the following step:calculating maximum values of all of said densities of respective columns or respective rows (Fig. 5).
  7. 11
The method of one of claims 7 to 10, further comprising the following step:calculating sum values of all of said densities of respective columns or respective rows (Fig. 6).
  8. 14
The method of one of claims 7 to 13, further comprising the following step:calculating a line-width of said signature by summing up the densities of a square of said digitized image (Fig. 7).
  9. 15
The method of one of claims 7 to 14, further comprising the following step:calculating one extreme value of said signature in any of the four orthogonal directions of said digitized image (Fig. 7).
  10. 16
The method of one of claims 7 to 15, further comprising the following step:calculating second order polynomials which describe said signature.
  11. 18
The method of one of claims 2 to 17, wherein during said reference signature analysis all reference parameter values are calculated (Fig. 1:20') and wherein during said signature verification one parameter value to be verified is calculated after the other (Fig. 1: 20).
  12. 19
The method of one of claims 1 to 18, wherein said comparing step comprises:calculating a difference between said parameter values to be verified and said corresponding reference parameter values and evaluating a probability value of correspondence depending on said difference.
