EP0473341A2

Compressed image stores for high resolution computer graphics.

Abstract

A graphics system (50) is disclosed within which video graphics images are calculated via a computer (11) and output for storage via a buffer (55, 56) whereby the image can be compressed/expanded (57, 58) for storage in compressed form in a dedicated semiconductor memory (59). The system (50) also permits storage of compressed images on hard disk (12) by directly connecting (64) the compressed image store (59,63) to a system bus (7). The compressed image store (19) can be duplicated (217, 218) and further compression/expansion units (213, 214, 215) added to broaden system versatility. Alternatively, a single compression/expansion unit (301) can be used.

24 claims: 6 independent, 18 dependent

  1. 1
A graphics system comprising:computer means connected to a bus, said computer means calculating at least one image from input data supplied via said bus;a memory buffer connected to said bus for storing a portion of said one image as said portion is calculated;and    processor means connected to said memory buffer and a first image store to (1) compress said portion when said memory buffer is full, the compressed portion being stored in said image store as compressed data, and (2) upon calculation of the next said portion and storing in said buffer, expanding the partial image from the image store into a compositor for combining with said next portion, the combined image being compressed into said image store.
  2. 15
A graphics system as claimed in claims 6 and 14, wherein said image reproduction means and said scanner are realized by a colour laser copier.
  3. 21
Image processing means for processing graphics images, for example for desktop publishing, comprising memory means for storing a portion of an image and processor means adapted to compress said portion for storage when said memory is full.
  4. 22
A method of image processing comprising storing an image in an image buffer, testing said buffer for fullness thereof, and in dependence upon said test, compressing said image for storage when a predetermined fullness criterion is met.
  5. 23
Image compression apparatus comprising means for compressing an image in strips further comprising means for inserting a marker code at the end of every strip within said compressed image data.
  6. 24
A desktop publishing system permitting storage of compressed images on hard disk including hard disk means (12), compressed image store means (59,63) and system bus means (7) in which the compressed image store means (59,63) is directly connected to the system bus (7).
