EP0472971A2

Piezoelectric driver using resonant energy transfer.

Abstract

A drive circuit (13) for use with a capacitive load (10) includes two transistors (18, 20) controlled by a drive voltage (22) and connected to the load (10) through an inductor (14). A supply voltage (16) is alternately connected and disconnected to the circuit (13) to achieve a resonant transfer of energy from the supply voltage (16). Energy stored in the load (10) is transferred to the inductor (14) and then back to the load (10), thereby reversing and augmenting the output voltage across the load (10) and providing an instantaneous output voltage many times the supply voltage. Diodes (24, 26) ensure that the current flows in the proper polarity through the transistors (18, 20). The output voltage across the load (10) is controlled by energy limiting means (30 - 44).

A drive circuit for driving a capacitive load (10), the drive circuit (13) comprising:an inductive element (14) having a first terminal and a second terminal (27), connected at its first terminal in series with the capacitive load (10) and forming an L-C circuit having a resonant frequency;a supply voltage source (16) producing a voltage at a first potential +V with respect to a second reference potential;switching means (18 - 26) for alternately connecting the second terminal (27) of the inductive element (14) to the supply voltage source (16) for current flow through the inductive element (14) and then to the reference potential for current flow in the opposite direction at a predetermined frequency less than the resonant frequency of the L-C circuit, characterized by    energy limiting means (30 - 44), connected to the L-C circuit, for responding to a predetermined voltage level in the L-C circuit by disconnecting the supply voltage source (16) from the L-C circuit and instead connecting the L-C circuit to the second reference potential.
