Arrangement in a computer system.

Abstract

In a device for synchronizing data and other information in a computer system which includes a common serial data transmission channel (212), at least two cooperating units (201) are arranged to be connected to the channel, a unit respective having a clock (207). A master clock is included in the system and the clock in one of the units can be used as the master clock. Units with a transmission element and an associated transmission channel are arranged in such a way that the time of the main clock can be transferred to the clocks of the other units. The clocks are arranged so that they can operate with a common time base.

10 claims: 5 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
Claims of equivalent WO 9013078 A1 PATENT CLAIMS 1. Arrangement for setting the relation of/synchron¬ izing data and other information in a computerized system which comprises a common serial data communication channel and two or more collaborating units, which are connected/can be connected to this channel via communica¬ tion elements (201) allocated to them, where the respec¬ tive unit/communication element comprises a clock (207) and where a main clock is included, for example by one of the clocks of the units/communication elements being allocated a main clock function, characterized in that the time of the main clock, or its reference, can be transferred via the communication channel between two or more units/communication elements (201), the clocks being arranged for relative coordination, and in that, in the respective unit/communication element affected, the clock(s) can be set with predetermined accuracy by means of hardware, or hard- and software in combination, in dependence on the main clock time.
  2. 2
Arrangement according to Claim 1, characterized in that the data or information which is associated with events, for example readings, sensor functions etc, are associated with/include a time reference or time informa- tion for the occurrence of the events.
  3. 3
Arrangement according to Claim 1 or 2, charac¬ terized in that the respective unit/communication element is arranged to process or store, by means of its own clock or a received time information for events which have occurred, data/information transferred via the communication channel, with consideration of the time difference, which has occurred or which has been deter¬ mined in the unit, between the occurrence of the event and the processing/storing.
  4. 4
Arrangement according to Claim 1, 2 or 3, charac¬ terized in that the clocks operate with a time difference which is less than a predetermined value, in that the -. SUBSTITUTESHEET time representation of the respective clock can be effected by means of an oscillator (211) which is allocated to the respective unit, the fundamental fre¬ quency of which oscillator is not synchronized to the oscillators of other units, and in that, in order to obtain a common time, the clocks can be corrected or resynchronized at intervals which have the result that the time difference drops below the predetermined value in relation to the main clock time.
  5. 5
Arrangement according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that the time difference between the main clock and the clock in the respective other units is selected to be considerably less than a time uncertainty which applies to the transfer of the message in the communication channel(s).
  6. 6
Arrangement according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that the respective serial digital transfer of a time message contains a bit pattern where the exact point in the message can be assigned to a particular instant in time relative to the main clock time.
  7. 7
Arrangement according to any of the preceding Claims 1 - 6, characterized in that the units/communicat¬ ion elements are arranged with hardware, or hard- and software in combination, which produces a correction of the fundamental frequency(frequencies) of the unit(s) concerned so that the respective clock is better matched to the time of the main clock, for example by the fact that such a sequence occurs in the transmission of the main clock time that the clock of the respective unit becomes variable in order to provide the possibility of better tracking of the time of the main clock.
  8. 8
Arrangement according to Claim 7, characterized in that the regulating is effected by means of hardware which is placed between the fundamental frequency which SUBSTITUTESHEET comes from the oscillator and the electronics which provide the time, and/or that the regulating is effected by the hardware in the clock electronics inserting or removing pulses into from the oscillator at certain intervals before the time is counted by means of the pulses, and/or that the regulating is effected by one or several different numbers being added to or subtracted from the respective clock after certain predetermined/ settable time intervals.
  9. 9
Arrangement according to Claim 8, characterized in that a register is included in the said hardware, that the data in this register can be loaded and/or calculated by means of software and/or that the data in the said register is obtained by means of electronics which automatically calculate, with the aid of time data transmitted from the outside, the value which will be stored in the register and/or that the data which is added to the respective clock can be stored in several registers together with the information when the adding to the clock will be effected and/or that the data is stored in the register and the adding can be initiated by means of software.
  10. 10
Arrangement according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that, in order to determine the time when the data is obtained in the unit concerned, the data transferred is followed by information of data according to the common clock/main clock so that the subsequent data processing in the other units takes into consideration the position in time of the data and/or that the transfer of the time data can be effected in such a manner that the communication element which is not arranged for time transmission can on the whole operate in the same communication channel without disturbances/problems or modifications.
