8 claims: 3 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A method of storing digital values of predetermined bit length, n, in machine readable format on a hardcopy recording medium, comprising the steps of:encoding said digital values in a corresponding one of 2 n distinctive, rotationally variant or invariant, discrimminable glyph shapes each glyph shape being composed of substantially the same number of ON pixels to generate a set of glyph shapes that vary in accordance with said digital values, and writing said set of glyph shapes on said recording medium in a predetermined logical order and in accordance with a predetermined spatially distributed pattern for storing said digital values in a self-clocking code.
  2. 2
The method of Claim 1 wherein at least some of said shapes are rotationally variant.
  3. 3
The method of Claim 2 wherein    said glyphs are elongated along axes that are tilted at angles of plus and minus 45° with respect to a horizontal axis to discriminate at least some of said digital values from each other.
  4. 4
The method of any one of Claims 1 to 3 wherein said glyphs are composed of respective pixel patterns that are printed in said region in tiled, two dimensional data cells of predetermined size, and said pixel patterns include substantially identical numbers of ON pixels and OFF pixels, such that the marked region of said recording medium has a generally uniform textured appearance.
  5. 5
The method of Claim 4 wherein said data values are single bit binary values, and said glyph shapes are elongated along axes that are tilted at angles of plus and minus 45° with respect to a horizontal axis depending on the values encoded therein.
  6. 6
A self-clocking code for encoding digital values of predetermined bit length. n;said code comprising glyphs conforming to selected ones of 2 n distinctive, rotationally variant or invariant, discrimminable glyph shapes each glyph shape being composed of substantially the same number of ON pixels;said digital values being encoded in the shapes of said glyphs, said glyph shapes being presented in a logical order and in accordance with a predetermined spatially distributed pattern.
  7. 7
A process for regenerating a printed self-clocking glyph shape code which has been encoded in accordance with any of Claims 1 to 5, comprising the steps of:decoding the printed code for recovering the digital values encoded in said glyph shapes;re-encoding said digital values in re-generated glyph shapes and printing said re-generated glyph shapes on a recording medium in accordance with the method of any of claims 1 to 5 .
