EP0469832A2

Method and apparatus for memory access control.

Abstract

A memory access control apparatus in a computer system, which can treat a read only memory (ROM) disk (47) for permanently storing an operating program and random access memory (RAM) disk (49) as one disk file or as different files of the same virtual disk, such as a ROM/RAM disk (51), and control write/read access to the disk file, having a program for reading out disk file control information (53) stored in the ROM disk when the system is powered on, a program for changing the contents of the read-out disk file control information to that of disk file control information (Fig.6) for the ROM/RAM disk, a memory (77b) for storing the ROM/RAM disk file control information in a predetermined position, a program (43, 45) for determining an access-requested address for the ROM/RAM disk file in accordance with the ROM/RAM disk file control information, and a program (43, 45) for transferring data to a position corresponding to the determining address. Accordingly, the ROM disk and RAM disk can be controlled as a single disk, thus ensuring compatibility with the current BIOS.

14 claims: 8 independent, 6 dependent

  1. 1
A memory access control system for a computer, comprising a ROM containing permanently stored operating programs, and a battery-backed random access (RAM) memory area, characterised in that the said ROM and RAM are arranged as disk files of a common virtual memory disk.
  2. 5
An apparatus according to any of claims 2 to 4 characterized in that the read means out the ROM disk file control information stored at the first sector (53) in the ROM disk file (47).
  3. 6
An apparatus according to any of claims 2 to 5 characterized by further comprising:means for determining, based on preset system setup information whether or not the disk file control information read out by the read means is to be changed to ROM/RAM disk file control information (91);and    control means (35) for controlling write/read access to the ROM disk file (47) independently of the RAM disk file (49) using the ROM disk file control information when there is no alteration to the ROM/RAM disk file control information in accordance with the determination result.
  4. 8
A method of controlling access to a ROM disk file (47) and a RAM disk file (49) as files of a single ROM/RAM disk (51), characterized by comprising the steps of:reading out disk file control information stored in the ROM disk file when a computer system is powered on;changing the disk file control information read out in the reading step to disk file control information (91) for the ROM/RAM disk file;storing the ROM/RAM disk file control information at a predetermined memory location (77b);determining (43, 45) an access-requested address for the ROM/RAM disk file in accordance with the stored ROM/RAM disk file control information;and    transferring (43, 45) data to a position corresponding to the determined address.
  5. 10
A method of controlling access to a ROM disk file (47) and RAM disk file (49) as files of single ROM/RAM disk (51), characterized by the steps of:reading out disk file control information (53) stored in the ROM disk file when the system is powered on;determining, on the basis of preset system setup information whether or not the ROM disk file and RAM disk file are to be accessed files of a single ROM/RAM disk;and    controlling (43, 45) write/read access to the ROM disk file independently of the RAM disk file using the ROM disk file control information (53) when no access control of the ROM/RAM disk file is required in accordance with the determination result.
  6. 12
Apparatus according to any of claims 1 to 7 in which the ROM and RAM disk files are arranged to be treated as different parts of the same disk data file.
  7. 13
A method according to any of claims 8 to 12 in which the ROM and RAM disk information are stored in the same data file.
  8. 14
A computer having memory access means according to any of claims 1 to 7.
