13 claims: 5 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
A process for the destruction of chemical waste comprising forming an electric plasma flame by heating a stream of gas by means of an electric discharge and introducing said waste into the vicinity of the plasma flame characterised in that said stream of gas comprises at least 70 per cent by weight oxygen, the waste is introduced in liquid form by means of a two fluid atomiser as droplets in a carrier gas present in an amount such that the ratio of the weight of carrier gas to the weight of liquid waste is from 0.1:1 to 0.3:1, sufficient oxygen is introduced into the vicinity of the flame to ensure a reaction mixture of oxygen and liquid waste in which the total amount of oxygen is at least 30% more than that required for complete combustion of the liquid waste, the reaction mixture is maintained at a temperature of at least 1450°C for at least 2 milliseconds and the reaction products obtained are subsequently cooled rapidly to below 300°C.
  2. 5
A process according to any one of claims 1 to 4 characterised in that the reaction mixture is maintained at a temperature of at least 1450°C for at least 4 milliseconds.
  3. 6
A process according to any one of claims 1 to 5 characterised in that the stream of gas is heated by an electric plasma flame formed by a pair of electrodes positioned in the gas stream and supplied with direct electric current.
  4. 8
A process according to any one of claims 1 to 7 characterised in that the mean temperature of the gas in the plasma flame is from 2750 to 3750°C.
  5. 10
A process according to any one of the preceding claims characterised in that the droplets have a size of from 100 to 750 microns.
  6. 11
A process according to any one of the preceding claims characterised in that the carrier gas is nitrogen.
  7. 12
A process according to any one of the preceding claims characterised in that the carrier gas is oxygen.
  8. 13
A process according to any one of the preceding claims characterised in that the reaction products obtained are cooled by spraying an aqueous cooling liquid into the reaction products through a venturi.
