  1. 1
A method for managing accesses to at least one logical track having KN sequentially ordered blocks distributed and stored onto an array of N DASDs in which a single parameter M specifies the trade-off between data rate and concurrency, each DASD including a cyclic track recording medium, each track having a storage capacity of K blocks, the array including control means responsive to read and write accesses from an external source for securing synchronous access to selectable ones of the N DASDs, the method comprising the steps of:(a) formatting and writing, by said control means, of the KN blocks onto N tracks of the N DASDs of the array responsive to a command from the external source, said blocks being written serially on said DASDs in row major order K modulo M and being written synchronously on said DASDs in column major order K modulo MN, M being less than or equal to K, such that the first group of M blocks of the logical track is on the first DASD, the second group of M blocks is on the second DASD and so on with the Nth group of M blocks being on the Nth DASD, the (N+1)th group being put onto the first DASD, the (N+2)th group on the second DASD and so on until the (KN/M)th group is placed on the Nth DASD;and (b) executing access requests from said external source over the N DASDs of the array such that each access of any subset of KN blocks formatted and written according to step (a) constitutes a synchronous data exchange of b blocks at a time with b counterpart DASDs and further such that (N-b) DASDs are concurrently available for binding to another access request, M varying inversely with b.
  2. 4
Apparatus for synchronously accessing selectable ones of an array of N DASDs in response to access requests from a connected system including a CPU; the apparatus including means responsive to KN sequentially ordered blocks from said system for writing said blocks onto N DASDs in which a single parameter M specifies the trade-off between data rate and concurrency, each DASD including a cyclic track recording medium, each track having a storage capacity of K blocks, the apparatus further comprising:means for formatting and writing the KN blocks onto the N tracks of N DASDs of the array responsive to a command from the system including a value for parameter M, the formatting and writing means writing said blocks onto the N tracks in row major order K modulo M and in column major order K modulo MN, M being less than or equal to K, such that the first group of M blocks of the logical track is on the first DASD, the second group of M blocks is on the second DASD and so on with the Nth group of M blocks being on the Nth DASD, the (N+1)th group being put onto the first DASD, the (N+2)th group on the second DASD and so on until the (KN/M)th group is placed on the Nth DASD;and means for executing access requests over the array from said system such that each access of any subset of the KN blocks constitutes a synchronous data exchange of b blocks at a time with b counterpart DASDs and further such that (N-b) DASDs are concurrently available fpr binding to another access request, M varying inversely with b.
