Position and motion detector.

Abstract

The position, velocity and/or acceleration of one portion (22A, 58) of an apparatus relative to another portion (20, 54) of the apparatus is measured with a hermetically enclosed sensor (12, 76, 102) having therein, a moveable armature (14, 78, 104, 122) magnetically coupled to the apparatus through a wall (28, 82, 108) of the hermetic enclosure (12, 76, 102) so as to move in a predetermined direction (32, 84, 116, 126) in response to relative motion (30, 66) of the apparatus, combined with an optical detector (34, 90, 114) extending within the same hermetic enclosure (12, 76, 102) for measuring the position and/or motion (32, 84, 116, 126) of the magnetically coupled armature (14, 78, 104, 122) responding to the relative motion (30, 66) of the apparatus.

10 claims: 2 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
    A sensor (10, 70, 100, 120) for detecting motion of an object (22, 58), characterized by:position following means (14, 78, 104, 122) coupled to the object (22, 58) by magnetic lines of force for moving in sympathy to motion (30, 66) of the object (222, 58);and    optical detection means (34, 90, 114) for measuring motion (32, 84, 116, 126) of the coupling means (14, 78, 104, 122).
  2. 10
An apparatus (10, 70, 100, 120) for detecting a position of one portion of a vehicle relative to another portion of a vehicle (20, 54), characterized by:magnetic coupling means (14, 78, 104, 122) attached to the another portion of the vehicle (20, 54) having a first position relative to a first position of the one portion of the vehicle (22A, 58) and a second position relative to a second position of the one portion of the vehicle (22A, 58), wherein the two positions of the coupling means (14, 78, 104, 122) are determined at least in part by magnetic attraction or repulsion or both between the coupling means (14, 78, 104, 122) and the one portion of the vehicle (22A, 58);and    optical means (34, 90, 114) for detecting the position of the coupling means (14, 78, 104, 122).
