10 claims: 5 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A telemetry system for an optical fiber transmission system comprising:a rare earth doped optical fiber amplifier (45-47, 49-51) for optically amplifying a received data signal, an optical pump (74) for generating optical energy in excess of the power that is necessary to pump the doped optical fiber coupled to pump said rare earth doped optical fiber amplifier, a source of telemetry signal,    CHARACTERIZED BY an oscillator (70) for generating a subcarrier signal, a modulator (71) coupled to modulate the subcarrier signal from the oscillator with the signals from the source of telemetry signals, and apparatus (72) for coupling the signal from the modulator to the optical pump to modulate the optical signal for pumping the rare earth doped optical fiber amplifier with the modulated subcarrier signal.
  2. 2
The telemetry system of claim I wherein said modulator amplitude modulates said subcarrier signal with said telemetry signals.
  3. 7
The telemetry system of claim I comprising an optical fiber coupled to said optical fiber amplifier for carrying amplified optical data signals and telemetry signals, a wavelength selective coupler (42) coupled to said optical fiber at a location remote from said optical fiber amplifier for separating the received modulated optical pump signals from the data signal amplified by said optical amplifier.
  4. 8
The telemetry system of claim I wherein the wavelength of the signal from the optical amplifier is substantially 1.55µm and the wavelength of the signal from the pump is substantially 1.48µm.
  5. 9
The telemetry system of claim I wherein the subcarrier modulated pump signal travels in the same direction as the data signal.
