Fibres and material comprising same.

Abstract

Synthetic fiber flakes for concrete, mortar or cement. These fibers contain about 10-10,000 filaments per flake and consist essentially of a polyolefin, for example polypropylene or polyethylene, a polyolefin derivative, a polyester, a polyamide or a mixture thereof. They have a length of about 1 to 30 mm, a mean transverse diameter of about 5 to 50 mum and a slenderness ratio of about 100 to 1000.     Claims of equivalent WO 9006902 A1 CLAIMS 1. Synthetic fibre bundles designed for use in concrete, mortar or cement, the bundles comprising about 10-10,000 filaments per bundle, the filaments consisting essentially of a polyolefin such as polypro- pylene or polyethylene, a polyolefin derivative, a polyester, a polyamide or a mixture of the foregoing and having a length of about 1 to about 30 mm, a mean transverse dimension of about 5 to about 50 μm and an aspect ratio of about 100 to about 1000, the individual filaments having a surface tension which allows them to become sub- stantially homogeneously dispersed in a concrete, mortar or paste wifh conventional mixing in conventional concrete mixing equipment.

    Synthetic fibre bundles according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the individual filaments have a mean transverse dimension of about 3-30 μm, such as about 5-25 μm, in particular about 10-20 μm.

    Synthetic fibre bundles according to any of the preceding claims, which consist essentially of polypropylene.

    Synthetic fibre bundles according to any of the preceding claims comprising about 50 to about 5000 filaments per bundle, such as about 100 to about 2000 filaments per bundle, in particular about 500 to about 1500 filaments per bundle, such as about 1000 filaments per bundle.

    Synthetic fibre bundles according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the fil.aments have an aspect ratio of about 200-800, in particular about 400-700, such as about 600.

    Synthetic fibre bundles according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the filaments have a surface tension of about 65-80 dynes/- cm , such as about 70-75 dynes/cm2, in particular about 72-74 dy- nes/cmi.

    Synthetic fibre bundles according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the surface of the filaments comprises a wetting agent which enhances the dispersion of the individual filaments of the bundle in an aqueous mixture such as a cement or concrete mixture, e.g. fatty acid esters of glycerides, fatty acid amides, polyglycol esters, polyethoxylated amides, nonionic surfactants, cationic surfactants, or blends of the above and/or other compounds normally used as emul- sifiers, surfactants or detergents.

    A cement-based concrete, mortar or paste having substantially homogeneously distributed therein synthetic fibres according to any of claims 1-10, the fibres being present in an amount of less than about 1% by weight of the cementitious materials of the concrete, mortar or paste.

    A method according to any of claims 23-25, wherein the synthetic fibre bundles are added in an amount of about 0.05-0.5%, in particu¬ lar about 0.1-0.3%, such as about 0.15-0.25%, by weight of the cemen¬ titious materials.

    A method of producing synthetic fibre bundles for use in con¬ crete, mortar or cement, the bundles comprising about 10-10,000 filaments per bundle, the filaments consisting essentially of a polyolefin such as polypropylene or polyethylene, a polyolefin der¬ ivative, a polyester, a polyamide or a mixture of the foregoing, the method comprising:melting the fibre raw material(s) to obtain a melt, - spinning the melt into spun bundles of filaments, stretching the bundles of filaments, drying and fixing the bundles of filaments, such that the stretched filaments after fixing have a mean transverse dimension of about 5 to about 50 μm, - treating the bundles of filaments with a wetting agent so as to provide the filaments with a surface tension which allows them to become substantially homogeneously dispersed in a concrete, mortar or paste with conventional mixing in conventional concrete mixing equipment, and cutting the bundles of filaments to a length of about 1 to about 30 mm, such that the individual filaments have an aspect ratio of about 100 to about 1000.

    A method according to any of claims 27-29, wherein the fibre bundles comprise about 50 to about 5000 filaments per bundle, such as about 100 to about 2000 filaments per bundle, in particular about 500 to about 1500 filaments per bundle, such as about 1000 filaments per bundle.

    A method according to any of claims 27-30, wherein the stretch ratio is about 2:1-5:1, preferably about 2.5:1-4:1, in particular about 2.5:1-3.5:1.

    A method according to any of claims 27-31, wherein the individual filaments in the stretched and fixed bundles of filaments have a mean transverse dimension of about 3-30 μm, such as about 5-25 μm, in particular about 10-20 μm.

    A method according to any of claims 27-32, wherein the bundles of filaments are treated with a wetting agent which enhances the dispersion of the individual filaments of the bundle in an aqueous mixture such as a cement or concrete mixture, e.g. fatty acid esters of glycerides, fatty acid amides, polyglycol esters, polyethoxylated amides, nonionic surfactants, cationic surfactants, or blends of the above and/or other compounds normally used as emulsifiers, surfac¬ tants or detergents.

    A method according to any of claims 27-34, wherein the treated filaments have a surface tension of about 65-80 dynes/cm , such as about 70-75 dynes/cm2, in particular about 72-74 dynes/cm2.

    A method according to any of claims 27-35, wherein the bundles of filaments are cut to a length of about 3-30 mm, such as about 5-25 mm, in particular about 6-18 mm.
