  1. 1
A method for controlling an electric motor (10) which is selectively coupled to a three-phase source (A, B, C) of alternating electricity by a contactor (15) and three thyristor switch means (16, 17, 18) connected in parallel with said contactor, said method comprising the following steps:activating the contactor (15) to couple the motor (10) to the source (A, B, C);deactivating the contactor (15) in response to a command to stop (57) the motor;characterized by the further steps of:    triggering all of the thyristor switch means (16,17,18) after deactivation of the contactor (15);detecting the first one of the triggered thyristor switch means (16, 17, 18) to become non-conducting;retriggering said first one of the thyristor switch means (16, 17, 18) which was detected to become non-conducting first;and    thereafter, sequentially triggering each of the thyristor switch means (16, 17, 18) in a pattern which reduces the speed of the motor (10).
  2. 3
An apparatus for controlling an electric motor (10) which is supplied by a three-phase source (A, B, C) of alternating electricity, said apparatus comprising:a contactor assembly (15) connecting each phase of the source (A, B, C) of alternating electricity to the motor (10) in response to a control signal;three thyristor switch means (16, 17, 18) connected in parallel with said contactor assembly, each coupling one phase of the source to the motor when rendered conductive by a trigger signal;a control circuit (21) for operating said contactor assembly (15) and said three thyristor switch means (16,17,18), said control circuit including means for discontinuing the application of the control signal to the contactor assembly (15) in response to a command to stop the motor (10);characterized in that said control circuit (21) further includes:    means (64, 65, 66) for sensing when said contactor assembly (15) is not connecting at least one of the source phases to the motor;means (21, 31, 32, 33), responsive to said means for sensing, for triggering said three thyristor switch means (16, 17, 18) substantially at the same time;means (64, 65, 66) for detecting when one of the thyristor switch means (16, 17, 18) is not conducting electricity after being triggered;and    means (21, 31, 32, 33) for triggering each of said thyristor switch means (16, 17, 18) in a given sequence to reduce the speed of the motor (10), wherein the triggering commences at a point in the sequence whereat the one thyristor switch means is triggered first.
