Lens edging system.

Abstract

A lens edging machine is numerically controlled by a computer to determine the rotation and displacement of a lens workpiece (16) with respect to an edging tool (10) in accordance with a lens shape stored in memory (60). The system continuously translates the lens workpiece (16) axially across the surface of the wheel (12, 14) to uniformly distribute wear across the wheel surface, reducing the need to dress the edging tool (10). The system compares the lens size with predetermined dimensions and compensates for any difference by automatically adjusting the lens trajectory during the edging of subsequent lens workpieces, permitting the edging tool to wear down without appreciable errors in lens size. The system controls the edging tool speed, the lens rotation rate, the lens axial feed velocity and the grinding force between the lens workpiece and the wheel at each discrete point during the entire lens edging operation to optimize production while preventing overheating of the lens workpiece. The optimum values for these parameters are empirically determined in a preparatory programmed trial and error learning process of the invention.

14 claims: 2 independent, 12 dependent

  1. 1
A lens edging system for shaping the edge contour of an optical lens workpiece, comprising:an edging tool;holding means for holding the lens workpiece;memory means for storing data representing a lens edge grinding trajectory with respect to the edging tool;servo means for moving the holding means whereby to rotate the lens workpiece through a succession of lens rotation angles about an axis of the holding means and to press the edge of the lens workpiece toward the edging tool up to a succession of lens radii corresponding to the succession of rotation angles;programmable microprocessor means connected to the memory means for controlling servo means whereby to regulate the succession of lens rotation angles and the succession of lens radii in accordance with the data representing the lens edging grinding trajectory stored in the memory.
  2. 10
A method of operating a lens edging system which controls the movement of a lens workpiece with respect to an edging tool, the method comprising:storing in memory data representing a succession of lens rotation angles and a corresponding succession of lens radii;holding the edge of the lens workpiece against the edging tool so as to reduce the lens workpiece to the succession of radii stored in the memory while rotating the lens workpiece to the corresponding succession of rotation angles stored in the memory;comparing the radius of the lens at a predetermined lens rotation angle to the correct radius and calculating an error therefrom;and reducing each one of the succession of radii in the memory by the magnitude of the error before edging a subsequent lens workpiece.
